Christiane Herzog , b. Krauss , (* 26. October 1936 in Munich , † 19 June 2000 ibid) was the wife of the reigning from 1994 to 1999, the German Federal President of Germany Roman Herzog . She became known for her commitment to cystic fibrosis patients .

Life

Her parents were Friedl and the Protestant pastor Paul Krauss. She had two younger siblings. Due to the war, she spent part of her childhood in the Allgäu . In 1946 the family moved to Berchtesgaden , where Christiane Krauss attended secondary school. When her father took over the dean's office in Landshut in 1949 , Christiane Krauß switched to the girls' high school run by the Cistercians in Landshut. Here she graduated from high school and then trained as a home economics teacher in Munich.

On August 2, 1958, Krauss married the later Federal President Roman Herzog. The two sons were born in 1959 and 1964. After her husband was appointed to the Free University of Berlin , the family moved to Berlin in 1965 . Her husband's professional and political career made further moves to Heidelberg , Bonn , Stuttgart and Karlsruhe . As Roman Herzog on 1 July 1994 the Office of the President took the couple moved to Berlin again - this time to the Bellevue Palace in the Tiergarten. After their term in office, Christiane and Roman Herzog returned to their Bavarian roots: while setting up their offices in Munich, they moved privately to Dachau, not far from Munich .

Christiane Herzog died on June 19, 2000 after a long and serious illness of colon cancer. She is buried in Landshut's main cemetery. In 2001 her widower married Alexandra von Berlichingen, who was also widowed .

Social work

From 1985 to 1993 Christiane Herzog was Vice President of the Christian Youth Village Association . From 1985 until her death, Christiane Herzog was the patron of Mukoviszidose eV. 1986 she founded the Förderverein Mukoviszidose -Hilfe e. V. , which she converted in 1997 into the Christiane Herzog Foundation for people with cystic fibrosis . The aim of the foundation is to raise awareness about this metabolic disease and to extend the life of those affected by the disease. To this end, the foundation supports institutions for interdisciplinary care and provides help in social emergencies. In addition, it has been awarding the Christiane Herzog Research Prize , the most highly endowed sponsorship prize for young scientists in Germany, since 2008 . The foundation is based in Stuttgart.

As the wife of the Federal President, Christiane Herzog was patron of the German Committee for UNICEF and the German Mothers' Convalescence Organization from 1994 to 1999 . She was involved in numerous aid projects at home and abroad and took care of people who asked her for help in social emergencies.

Trivia

During her husband's tenure, she hosted the TV program “ Guest at Christiane Herzog” , in which a prominent guest was invited to cook and chat together at Bellevue Palace; The cook Otto Koch was a regular contributor .
