Elke Büdenbender
Elke Büdenbender (born January 14, 1962 in Weidenau , Siegen district ) is a German lawyer . On December 27, 1995, she married Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who was then the departmental coordinator of the Lower Saxony state government and is now President of the Federal Republic, and has therefore been the “ First Lady of Germany ” since March 19, 2017 .
Life
Elke Büdenbender comes from a Catholic family in Siegerland and grew up in Salchendorf , a district of Netphen . Her father was a carpenter , her mother a home economics teacher . She was the first child in her family to graduate from university .
After training as an industrial clerk, she completed her high school diploma at the Siegerland College . In 1985 she began studying law at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen . During her studies in 1988 she met Frank-Walter Steinmeier, whom she married in 1995. They have a daughter who was born in 1996. A training station her in Hannover begun legal traineeship she graduated at the German Embassy in Washington .
After completing her legal clerkship in 1994, she took up her first position as an administrative judge at the Hanover Administrative Court . Since 2000 she has worked as a judge specializing in social law at the Berlin Administrative Court.
On August 24, 2010, she had a kidney transplant donated to her by her husband. After her husband's election as Federal President, she took a leave of absence from her judicial office.
