The Gymnasium Seligenthal is a private , state-recognized high school in Landshut (only for girls up to the school year 2008/2009 ), which leads to a general university entrance qualification in a linguistic (SG), a social science (WSG-S) and an arts branch (MG) . Despite its long history, it is the youngest of the three grammar schools in Landshut and is named after the Seligenthal monastery , which has operated the grammar school together with other schools of the Seligenthal School Foundation since it was founded. Since 2014 it has been one of the “Fairtrade Schools”. The number of pupils in the 2018/2019 school year was 808. 119 pupils have registered for the 2019/2020 school year.

history

Origins

The Seligenthal monastery was founded in 1232 by Duchess Ludmilla as a Cistercian convent and designated as the burial place of the Wittelsbach family .

In the age of secularization it became more and more difficult for the contemplative monastery to survive, so that in 1782, when the educational situation for girls was still very poor, the sisters opened a girls' school to prove their usefulness for the community. This school was continued by the nuns after the abolition of the monastery in 1803 to 1820 and when King Ludwig I allowed the monastery to reopen in 1835 (five sisters were still alive), this was done with the obligation to continue to "educate women Youth “to take care of Landshuts. That is why the education of girls is now the second purpose of the Seligenthal Monastery. B. also adapted the times of the choir prayers to this unusual task for Cistercians .

From these origins, the educational facilities of the Seligenthal school center have developed to this day, including the higher schools: The trivial school was developed into a secondary school for daughters , then the lyceum and also a primary school were added, and at the same time the teacher training institute became the specialist academy for social education . The number of female pupils grew, only with interruptions in 1820–35 and 1938–45, from around 100 in 1780 to 1750 in 1982.

Development of high schools

The development of Seligenthal's secondary schools for girls, like the rest of the school landscape in Bavaria, was characterized by diversity, changes and renaming of school types, school duration and foreign language sequences.

In 1838 the "Seligenthal Educational Institute in Landshut" was opened for retirees aged 6-16 years; from 1873, half- pensioners are also recorded. The first printed annual reports were published in 1885, where the school is referred to for the first time as the "Higher Töchterschule". From 1911 it was converted into a six-class “Higher Girls' School” with the compulsory foreign language French, and from 1925 into a “Girls Lycéum” with the compulsory foreign languages English and French.

In the course of the abolition of all monastery schools by the National Socialists , the school was handed over to the city of Landshut in 1938, but was returned as an eight-grade high school in 1945. At first only grades 5–8 existed, a year later grades 9–12 were opened and the school was renamed “Oberrealschule” and again a year later the first Abitur was written. The upper secondary school offered both a linguistic and a mathematical-scientific branch. At the same time, the training facilities for female teachers had developed further since 1838 and in 1949 they were transferred to a seven-year "Oberrealschule in short form", which existed in addition to the regular Oberrealschule. In 1951 the education of all higher schools was extended to nine years and the linguistic branch of the Oberrealschule was simultaneously converted into a " Mädchenrealgymnasium " with the foreign language sequence English, Latin, French. In 1954 the Oberschule was renamed in short form "Deutsches Gymnasium".

From 1965 the upper secondary school is dismantled and the "social science high school" is built. The new name of the school is "Modern language, music (in short) and social science high school of the Cistercians", but the music high school is also dismantled from 1968 onwards. Open to new teaching concepts took Seligenthal from 1970 on school experiment Kollegstufe part that was later introduced throughout Bavaria. With the school year 2008/09 a music school was introduced again. The grammar school has also been open to boys since the 2009/10 school year.

The general renovation of the grammar school in Seligenthal Abbey has been underway since 2011. This is subsidized by the Niederbayern administrative region with a total of 200,000 euros.

financing

In 2000, the sponsorship was transferred from the Seligenthal Abbey to the Seligenthal School Foundation. a. of the Seligenthal high school. As for all state-recognized private schools, the Free State of Bavaria pays a “state school fee” for schoolchildren, but this does not cover the costs. In addition, the parents have to pay school fees (40 € / month, for the Musisches Gymnasium 50 € / month).

In 2014, the Landshut district granted the Seligenthal School Foundation a monthly grant of € 8,888.55 for the use of the district's own school building on Seligenthaler Straße. In the 2015/2016 school year, the operating subsidy amounted to € 460,260 (2014: € 451,300) for the total of 442 district children (October 1, 2013: 491) at the grammar school and the 159 (153) district children in the business school. This is calculated from 80 percent of the guest school contribution of € 825 for high school students and € 1325 for business students.

A school support association has existed since 2001 , which provides funds for special purposes, e.g. B. provides school social work, school equipment (e.g. teaching material, computers, etc.) and grants for school events.
