Trivial school

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the late Middle Ages and early modern times, a Latin school was called a trivial school , which taught the trivium in contrast to the university at which the quadrivium and all higher sciences were taught.

Since the 17th century, the term was used specifically for schools that grant only elementary education, both for schools that prepared for higher grammar schools (high schools) and for civil or elementary schools . "Trivial" means, also in a negative sense, simple or elementary. A trivial student is a student who only attends a simple school.

In the latter sense, the Economic Encyclopedia by JG Krünitz describes a trivial school as follows: “School (trivial =), mixed country = and community schools, where girls and boys are taught together. There are only lower schools where only elementary instruction in reading, writing and arithmetic, religion, etc., etc. is given; ... Here in Prussia they tried as much as possible in the lower schools, especially in the cities, for the sake of morality, to separate boys and girls, in the country this is not very possible because the local is often limited is. "

Examples of trivial schools can be found alongside numerous other cities in Geseke , Siegburg , Sankt Andrä (Carinthia) and Hamm . In Schüttorf there was also a so-called trivial school in the 16th century, but this saw itself as an educational institution that prepared for university studies and not as a simple country school.
