The Maximilian-von-Montgelas-Gymnasium (short: MMG ) in Vilsbiburg is a state-run natural science and technology (NTG) and linguistic high school (SG) in Lower Bavaria . It is the only grammar school in the southern district of Landshut and mainly attracts students from the old district of Vilsbiburg and the northern district of Mühldorf . 90 students have registered for the 2019/2020 school year.

history

Like many others in Lower Bavaria, the grammar school was built in the early 1970s as part of an educational expansion. Classes in Vilsbiburg began on September 7, 1971. At that time the school was still housed in the buildings of the Vilsbiburg Agricultural Vocational School . The school's own building was not moved into until September 17, 1974.

From 1988 the grammar school was an experimental school for the new subject of information technology basic education (ITG) and was equipped with a computer room for 60,000 DM. The first structural changes were made from 1990 to 1993: a pavilion with two music halls and an observatory was built on the roof, and teachers' rooms and administration rooms were converted. Since August 1, 1996, the school has had its current name after the Bavarian minister and state reformer Maximilian von Montgelas , buried in 1838 at Aham Castle near Vilsbiburg. Another construction measure was carried out in 1997 and 1998 when the school library (and at the same time the district and city library) got a new, modern building with over 700 square meters of public space on the north side of the grammar school. The old premises with a floor area of around 300 square meters had become much too small for the library's holdings of around 32,000 volumes at the time.

The last major structural change was the construction of the new cafeteria in 2006, including a theater and music room and a room for the student council . The total cost was 1.75 million euros. The start of major renovation measures is due in 2017. For the construction of a gymnasium, funds amounting to 450,000 euros were provided in the 2016 budget of the Landshut district. At the beginning of February 2017, the building committee of the district decided to plan this as a multi-purpose sports hall instead of a pure double gym. A common use for physical education and other school events by the grammar school and secondary school as well as the holding of cultural events should be made possible. The groundbreaking for the general renovation was on June 30, 2017. In the course of the return to the nine-year high school ( G9 ), the building committee of the district council decided in July as part of the general renovation to add four classrooms, an additional physics room and the expansion of the two computer rooms .

particularities

As a result of his work as President of the German Teachers 'Association (DL) and as an education critic, the grammar school was repeatedly in the focus of reporting during Josef Kraus' tenure as headmaster when it came to teacher shortages in Bavarian schools, the advantages or disadvantages of the G8 or the The flexi year was introduced at Bavarian schools. In addition, the special features of the grammar school include:

  • Since 1980 it has been the contact school of the State Institute for School Quality and Educational Research (ISB Bavaria) for all of Lower Bavaria.
  • There is an observatory on the roof of one of the school buildings. The location on the outskirts and the generally low light pollution in the rural area allow good observation results. The main instrument is an apochromatic refractor with an aperture of 180 mm and a focal length of 1800 mm for observing the moon , other planets and objects outside of our solar system . Another telescope with an opening width of 125 mm and a focal length of 1250 mm is also available as a guide scope and for observing the sun .
  • Attached to the grammar school is a library with around 45,000 volumes on over 700 square meters of public space. In addition, there are over 90 workstations for concentrated reading and looking up. It is not just a school library, but also open to the public as the Vilsbiburg district and city library . Since the new building in 1997/98, the spatial capacities have been significantly expanded.
  • In the schoolyard there is a copy of the sculpture "Gemini" by the sculptor Georg Brenninger .
