Aham Castle today

The Aham Castle is located in the municipality Aham in the district of Landshut of Bavaria (Castle Street 20).

history

In Aham a moated castle was built on the Vils around 900 to protect against the Hungarian invasions . In 1144 the Ahamers (Achaimers) were first mentioned in a document as lords of the castle and the landlord. They were followed from 1420 to 1598 by the nobles von Laiming , who founded one of their headquarters here. In a description of the country from 1579 it says: A stream flows into a small lake on which the Ahaim Castle is located. Ahaim is a castle in the most lovely valley of the Vils, surrounded by moats through which the Vils flows.

After this, the Maxlrain and the Thannberg were resident here. Maria Anna Josepha Susanna von Maxlrain was born here in 1708 and also died here († December 22, 1756). She married Ferdinand Freiherr von Lerchenfeld († Munich, July 13, 1776) and so Aham came to the Barons of Lerchenfeld . In the 17th and 18th centuries they founded the so-called Ahamer family line. Caspar Freiherr von Lerchenfeld received on 17 February 1587 by Duke Wilhelm the lower courts for Aham awarded. In 1749 Ferdinand Carl von Lerchenfeld built the still existing farm buildings.

On October 8, 1817, Josef Freiherr von Lerchenfeld sold the Hofmark Aham to the Electress of Bavaria Maria Leopoldine of Austria-Este . Then Aham passed into the possession of the knight von Mayer. In 1833 this Hofmark was acquired by Minister Maximilian Joseph Graf von Montgelas together with the Hofmark Egglkofen and Gerzen . After his death in 1838, he was buried at his own request in the crypt of the chapel in Aham Castle. Until 2009, the castle was owned by the Montgelas family.

Aham Castle then and now

As can be seen in the engraving by Michael Wening from 1721, Aham Castle is surrounded by the Vils and a moat. A brick bridge leads to the first building in the palace area, which is provided with a stepped gable. Further buildings and a tower covered with a tent roof can be seen behind it . Today there are still remains of a round tower, a pond remains from the moat. Today there are farm buildings around the actual castle. The area is framed by a driveway.

Until 1955, all traffic from Vilsbiburg to Frontenhausen ran through the village and through the castle on Schlossstrasse. This only changed when the road with the new Vilsbrücke was built.

The palace and the St. Georg palace chapel are privately owned and not open to the public.
