history
Egglkofens was first mentioned in a document in 1200. The place was the seat of a closed Hofmark of the Barons von Dachsberg. From 1797 to 1838 the Counts of Lerchenfeld owned the Hofmark, which was converted into a 2nd class patrimonial court in 1820 . On December 30, 1833, Maximilian Joseph Graf von Montgelas (1759–1838) acquired Egglkofen Castle for 107,100 guilders from Baron Max von Lerchenfeld . Montgelas died on June 14, 1838 in his Munich palace. The successor of the father as entertainer on Egglkofen (with associated possessions) had taken the eldest son Maximilian Joseph Philipp von Montgelas (1807-1870).
Shortly before the end of the Second World War, on April 21, 1945, a German passenger aircraft of the type Focke-Wulf 200 B-2 Condor crashed in the district of Piesenkofen. The 25 bodies were not recovered until 1952.
In June 2005 it was announced that the Free State of Bavaria had bought Egglkofen Castle. In fact, Rudolf-Konrad Graf von Montgelas, Freiherr von der Heydte (1939–2015) bequeathed the castle to the non-profit Graf von Montgelas Foundation in Egglkofen in 2011 .
