geography

Location and climate

The place is in the Vilstal about ten kilometers south of the district town of Dingolfing . The local recreation area Vilstalstausee is not far from the village . Frontenhausen lies on the Vils, surrounded by alluvial meadows, between the Isar and Rottal valleys. The climate is typically Central European.

Parish parts

There are 38 parts of the municipality : The main town is Frontenhausen, the church villages Georgenschwimmbach , Loitersdorf and Witzeldorf as well as the villages Bertensdorf and Biegendorf, as well as the Waldfried settlement , also exist . In addition, the hamlets with church Altenkirchen , Rampoldstetten and Wettersdorf as well as the hamlets Eiselsdorf, Friedersdorf, Ödgarten, Reisach, Schwaige and Wachlkofen are counted, but also the desert areas ( single settlements ) Aign, Bach, Berg, Bircha, Feldmühle, Fuchsberg, Gaiswang, Geisbruck, Grub, Grubwinkl, Grund, Haag, Lichtenegg, Moospoint, Moselding, Oed, Rieglöd, Sandöd, Schaufl, Schern, Sonnleiten and Wollöd.

history

Prehistoric times

A settlement can be proven up to prehistoric times. There are finds of hunted prehistoric elephants ( Deinotheria ) in the Munich Museum "Mensch und Natur" . Findings in the area suggest that the first settlements existed as early as 4000 years ago in the Neolithic Age. Settlement has been documented by finds since the Bronze Age, as well as in the Celtic era, which suggests continuous settlement since Roman times.

middle Ages

Vague references around 800 point to the origins of the name with “Houses of Franto”, and the first documented mention of the Counts of Frontenhausen comes from around 1100. From around 1180 the newly built Teisbach Castle served as the seat of the county. 1226 was extinguished with the death of the 1204 Bishop of Regensburg selected Konrad IV. Of Frontenhausen the Counts. The market law was in 1386 by Friedrich, Count Palatine of the Rhine and Duke of Bavaria granted. Frontenhausen also had a city wall with city gates . In 1423 the curtain wall was completed, the course of which can still be traced and the last of the three gates was demolished in 1903.

Modern times

The so-called " Römerschanze " is located in the southwest of the market . However, this is not a Roman castrum , but a defense system that was built in the course of the Thirty Years War to protect against marauding (including Swedish) militias . In the area that is now completely wooded, the basic principle of a ditch with a protective wall around a level can still be seen. Fires in 1536, 1738 and 1770 caused great damage to the village. The market town in its current form was founded by the Bavarian municipal edict in 1818. The places Auerberg, Feldmühle and Waldfried also belonged to Frontenhausen.

In the 1950s, the important rectory, which belonged to the Landshut-style Gothic, then Baroque and finally Neo-Gothic modified church was demolished. As part of the district reform in Bavaria , Frontenhausen was reclassified on July 1, 1972 from the Vilsbiburg district to the Untere Isar district, which was renamed the Dingolfing-Landau district on May 1, 1973. The Frontenhausen administrative community founded in 1978 was dissolved again in 1980.

The former pilgrimage church of St. Corona rises on a hill in Altenkirchen, where pilgrims who make pilgrimages from Regensburg to Altötting often take a short break in May.

A redevelopment of the town center could only be planned after the bypass was approved in 2002 and from 2007 onwards led to an extensive redesign of the market square and its surroundings. A commercial area is being created at the newly built roundabout. There is commercial space on the outskirts and, since the mid-1990s, a family-friendly new development area in the southwest.

The place also gained national fame through the meanwhile six film adaptations of the Eberhofer crime novels by Rita Falk (see film and television ). Frontenhausen was described by the author as the place that has the most similarities with the fictional place Niederkaltenkirchen. The roundabout , which can be seen prominently in the film adaptations, has officially been named Franz-Eberhofer-Kreisel since August 8, 2018.

The former municipality of Rampoldstetten with the associated villages, hamlets and individual farmsteads complement the extensive municipality to form a comprehensive, rural, modern unit.

Incorporations

On May 1, 1978, the previously independent municipality of Rampoldstetten was incorporated. In 1978, Loitersdorf was reclassified from the community of Aham to Markt Frontenhausen.

Population development

In the period from 1988 to 2018, the market grew from 3,211 to 4,674 by 1,463 inhabitants or 45.6% - the highest percentage growth in the district in the period mentioned.

Buildings

  • The center of the place is the almost square Marienplatz with the golden statue of the Virgin Mary from the 19th century - erected in 1874. The buildings date from the 18th to the 20th century, sedate town houses with mostly curved or crenellated stepped gables. On the west side there is a long wing of the building with a hipped roof from the 18th century, consisting of the town hall and Marienapotheke. As part of the market square renovation in 2009, the statue of the Virgin was integrated into a fountain. For this purpose, an artist competition was announced.
  • The parish church of St. Jakob is a late Gothic three-aisled pseudo - basilica . It was restored in 1536 after a local fire and changed in the 17th and 20th centuries. It has a rib vault and predominantly neo-Gothic furnishings from the mid-19th century. Anselm Sickinger created the altars from 1854 to 1858.
  • Dominated by the higher-foundation Gothic Church of St. Jakob, there are monuments from a wide variety of times. In addition to townhouses based on Gothic origins and typical Lower Bavarian farm properties, there are horizontally divided small farms owned by day laborers 150 years ago, magnificent buildings from the Wilhelminian era (Feldmühle), remains of early industrial buildings (Röhrl brewery) and the Art Nouveau brewery restaurant " Zur Post ”with the post office.

traffic

Rail transport

The station Frontenhausen-Marklkofen is located on the railway line Mühldorf-Pilsting and forms since the closure by 13 December 1969 of the section from the station Frontenhausen-Marklkofen until after Pilsting the endpoint of the segment. Until recently, the section was only used for freight traffic. The route section has been tendered for sale by DB Netz AG since 2006 and leased from the Rhein-Sieg-Eisenbahn (RSE) on June 30, 2010 . In the medium term, bridges are to be renovated and wooden sleepers replaced. Because of the necessary investments in the line to maintain the operability of up to four million euros, the RSE wants to part with the line. Since the maintenance backlog endangered operational safety, the RSE had to close the route on October 9, 2017. With effect from May 22, 2018, the line was shut down by the Bavarian State Ministry for Housing, Building and Transport following a corresponding application by Rhein-Sieg-Eisenbahn GmbH. However, there is still a little hope of a route rehabilitation, as the neighboring companies are trying to keep the route running.

Road traffic

Frontenhausen is on the state roads 2083 and 2111. The village center is about 15 kilometers from the motorway junctions 19 (Dingolfing-Mitte) and 20 (Dingolfing-Ost) on the federal motorway 92 , the city center of Landshut is about 34 kilometers away via the state road 2054 .
