The Vilstalsee is a reservoir and flood retention basin on the Vils , around 4 km downstream from Frontenhausen and around 1 km upstream from Reisbach , in the municipality of Marklkofen , immediately south of the towns of Steinberg and Warth. The land owner is the Free State of Bavaria.

In the northwest is the Steinberg outdoor pool. To the east is the so-called Bay of Pigs, where surfers practice their sport in summer. This part of the lake is safest for ice sports in winter because of its shallow depth.

Reservoir

The reservoir was created by the Landshut Water Management Office from 1972 to 1976 , primarily for flood protection . Other purposes are leisure and recreation; the lake is a recreational area (boat rental, sailing, surfing, swimming, camping). The Höfertsmühle an der Vils, a district of the former municipality of Reith, which was incorporated into Marklkofen in 1972, had to be given up to create the reservoir. At the 1925 census, the Höfertsmühle still had 10 residents in one building.

The western part of the lake and the adjoining area with meadows, bodies of water, reed beds and woody stands was declared a nature reserve "Vilstal bei Marklkofen" in 1984, with a size of almost 175 hectares.

The tributaries of the lake are: Vils, Schwimmbach (in the south), Zitterbach (in the west); the outflow is solely the Vils (in the east). In normal operation, the lake is only up to a level of 398.80 m above sea level. NN dammed, 9.2 million m³ of the total of 9.7 million m³ are kept as a flood protection area. The lake area is then 98 ha.

Buildings

The barrier structure is a dam . Its overflow structure is a weir with two weir flaps. There are also two bottom outlets and one service outlet . The subsoil is sealed with a narrow diaphragm wall between 8 and 12 m deep.

environment

In the summer of 2009, an unusually heavy herbage from aquatic plants (macrophytes) was found, which impaired sailing operations and led to the cancellation of sailing competitions. Due to the strong plant growth in the lake, the water has become very species-rich. Nine of these plants are on the Red List for endangered animals and plants in Bavaria. In 2010 there were fewer aquatic plants and the number of species also decreased; but the growth of filamentous green algae was very strong. Obviously in spring 2010 the algae had more favorable starting conditions. The flood retention function is not impaired by aquatic plants or algae. On January 15, 2010, the Vilstalsee cut the high water peak of the Vils in half.
