Until the church is planted

Gerzen (formerly also Görzen) is one of the oldest places in the Vilstal. It was first mentioned in 887 as "Jorcin" and was owned by the Frankish kings . In the early 14th century, King Ludwig IV granted Gerzen market rights. After 1521 the Hofmark Gerzen was formed, the center of which was Gerzen Castle and the rectangular market square. From 1597 to 1819 the barons of Vieregg exercised lower jurisdiction and lordship in Gerzen and Mangern in Hofmark . In 1833 it was acquired by the former Bavarian State and Conference Minister Maximilian von Montgelas .

In the course of the administrative reforms in Bavaria , today's municipality was created with the municipal edict of 1818 .

Administrative community

Territorial reform

The municipal reform brought about the incorporation of Lichtenhaag and the incorporation of the municipal parts of Gmain, Paradies, Reismühle, Resenöd and Rutting from the neighboring municipality of Kröning on May 1, 1978 . At the same time from the municipalities Gerzen, Aham , Kröning and Schalkham the administrative community Gerzen formed.

In 1981 Prading was first outsourced to the city of Vilsbiburg and then in 1984 the towns of Ay , Hartlsöd , Neißl , Oberhof and Schlicht . In 1985 Ay, Oberhof and Schlicht moved back to Gerzen. In 1984 Krüglmühle was outsourced to Kröning.

coat of arms

Unofficial coat of arms
Gerzen coat of arms
Blazon : "In silver three, two-to-one set, forward curved black hooks, each obliquely left covered with a straight black hook."
Justification of the coat of arms: With the decision of the municipal council and with the consent of the State Ministry of the Interior , Gerzen has had a coat of arms since June 12, 1968. It corresponds to the family coat of arms of the Counts of Vieregg (from around 1356 to 1400), a family of knights from Mecklenburg who bought the Hofmark in 1597 and owned it for 222 years.

The coat of arms used unofficially by the municipality differs from the official blazon and the historical coat of arms of the Vieregg - especially with regard to the tincture (color) of the common figures - and the heraldic color rule is contradicted.

Attractions

Parish Church of St. George

It was originally late Romanesque: between 1500 and 1522, the north aisle was added, while the central nave was raised and vaulted. From 1872 to 1882 a neo-Gothic redesign took place, with the south aisle and the three-storey tower being built. Inside, an epitaph made of red marble for Alexander Leberskirchner († 1521), created by Stephan Rottaler from Landshut, is of particular importance, as well as a late Gothic Pieta around 1500 and a late Romanesque font.

Gerzen Castle

The renaissance structure of the castle dates from 1562, the baroque castle chapel from 1695. The castle park with enclosure was laid out in 1903. From 1833 to 2010 it was owned by the von Montgelas, then converted into a restaurant and received the Bavarian Monument Preservation Award in December 2014.
