The main ingredient
The Main Ingredient is an American soul and R&B formation from Harlem , which celebrated its greatest successes in the 1970s.
history
The group was founded in 1964 under the name The Poets. Founding members were lead singers Donald McPherson, Luther Simmons Jr. and Tony Silvester . After doing some recordings on smaller, local labels , they renamed themselves The Insiders. A record deal with RCA Records followed . In 1966, they changed their name a third and final time to The Main Ingredients.
The group joined Bert DeCoteaux, who produced their first US top 30 hit: You've Been My Inspiration . This was followed by I'm So Proud (the cover version of a song by The Impressions ), Spinning Around (I Must Be Falling in Love) and Black Seeds Keep on Growing , all of which were even better placed in the charts.
In 1971, Donald McPherson died unexpectedly of leukemia and Cuba Gooding senior (the father of actor Cuba Gooding junior ) took his place. His first single with this group was Everybody Plays the Fool of 1972, the Group not only a gold record ( RIAA certification earned), but also in the top five of both the pop - and the R & B single charts placed . Just Don't Want to Be Lonely from 1974 also had gold status .
Tony Silvester left the group in 1976 not only to embark on a solo career, but also to start his own production company with Bert DeCoteaux. He was temporarily replaced by Carl Tompkins, but the group broke up the following year. Cuba Gooding senior went to Motown and Luther Simmons Jr. became a stockbroker. The group reunited twice in the formation Silverman, Simmons, Gooding - once from 1979 to 1982 and again in 1986. Their publications were not nearly as successful as in the 1970s. Luther Simmons Jr. was briefly replaced by Jerome Jackson. In 1999 The Main Ingredient formed again with Carlton Blount as the new lead singer. Tony Silvester died on November 27, 2006 at the age of 65.
The Main Ingredient became known again in Germany in the late 1990s when the Freundeskreis group sampled the track That Ain't My Style from the album Rolling Down a Mountainside for their song Esperanto . In 2005, the same luscious piano - string arrangement made it back into the charts with the song On My Knees by the group The 411 .
