Thomas Righter "Tom" Snow (* 1947 in Princeton , New Jersey ) is an American songwriter , composer and pianist who was nominated twice for an Oscar and has won numerous music awards.

Life

In 1965, Snow was a student at Berklee College of Music in Boston , hoping for a career as a jazz pianist. Four years later, he made his bachelor's degree in music composition as the second best in his class. While he still wanted to be a jazz pianist, he also had the goal of building a career writing songs. In the summer of 1969, he went to California and found a job at Viscount Records in Santa Monica . Together with another colleague Michael Fondiler, he wrote songs in the field of folk music for clubs and small restaurants. Both were discovered by Michael O'Bryant and got an album contract with Clean Records, a subsidiary of Atlantic Records. Their LP Country was released a year later . In 1975 he wrote his two solo albums Taking I All in Stride and Tom Snow at Capitol Records, where Snow was now under contract, and in 1982 his last solo album Hungry Nights (Clive Davis Arista Records).

In 1977 Snow wrote the two songs Thunder in My Heart and Gettin 'Ready for Love for the television series Top of the Pops and gradually switched to writing songs for others. That same year he received his first BMI Airplay award for the song You , which Snow wrote for his first Capitol album and which was sung by Rita Coolidge , and which became a top 40 hit for the singer. The success of this song marked the beginning of Snow's career as a songwriter. For the next 25 years he worked with a variety of artists in and around Hollywood who are among the best in their genre. He also worked for film and television and composed the music for the Broadway musical Footloose . Snow worked several times with the British-Australian singer Olivia Newton-John and the magician David Copperfield .

Snow has won numerous awards and has been nominated for many, including an Oscar , a Grammy , an Emmy, and a Tony Award . Numerous BMI awards for his songs are also among his awards. At the 1985 Academy Awards , he and Dean Pitchford were nominated for an Oscar in the “Best Song” category with the song Let's Hear It for the Boy from the dance film Footloose . However, the Oscar went to Stevie Wonder and the song I Just Called to Say I Love You from Gene Wilder's comedy The Woman in Red . In 1986 Snow won the prestigious Robert J. Burton Award for BMI Most Performed Country Song of the Year, Do Not Call It Love , sung by Dolly Parton .

In 1990 Snow was nominated again for an Oscar, again together with Dean Pitchford. For the comedy film A Heavenly Lover , they wrote the song After All . Howard Ashman and Alan Menken and the song Under the Sea from the cartoon Ariel, the Mermaid emerged as winners from the Oscar election .

The Internet Movie Database lists 72 films in the Soundtrack section on which Snow collaborated. In 2000 the artist was honored with the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Berklee. Snow lives with his wife Mary Belle in Montecito , California.
