action
The witch Marina lives on a small island off the coast of the USA. She dreams of marrying a man who comes to the island. When the New York butcher Leo Lemke is on vacation on the island and lands there with his boat, Marina throws herself at him. She marries him two days later.
Marina works in her husband's butcher shop. She can predict what customers want. Marina also gives advice in life situations, so she moves the shy singer Stella Keefover to buy a daringly cut dress and sing in front of a larger audience. She tells the single Grace that she will soon be cooking for two if she realigns. She found a temporary job in the butcher's shop for the street artist Eugene, who was released on parole and who painted the shop window.
Keefover and Eugene are patients of psychiatrist Dr. Alex Tremor, Grace is friends with him. The doctor hears about the woman influencing other people's lives and becomes curious.
Leo feels his wife's clairvoyant abilities are threatening. He asks Dr. Tremor to treat Marina. The first session turns into an evening spent together with Alex and Marina roller-skating in a park .
When Stella sings in a bar, Leo fascinates her. Leo and Stella fall in love. Stella tells Alex about her doubts about loving a married man. Alex urges her to take a decisive step.
Marina realizes that she loves Alex, not Leo. She tells Alex that he would love her too and shouldn't deny this love. Later she packs her things and returns to the island. The confused Dr. Tremor reveals itself to one of his patients, who takes over the chair and pose of the psychiatrist for this time.
Alex wants to talk to Grace in the middle of the night. There he meets his partner Robyn Graves, who has just started a lesbian relationship with Grace. Alex drives to the island, finds Marina and kisses her.
Reviews
Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times on October 25, 1991 that some concessions to the prevailing ideas in Hollywood would weigh on the script. This made the film manipulative . Ebert disliked the way in which Marina left Leo. Demi Moore looks warm and cuddly .
Desson Howe wrote in the Washington Post on October 25, 1991 that watching the film was a pleasant experience . He praised the presence of Demi Moore, who with the blonde hair looks appropriately otherworldly , as well as that of Jeff Daniels.
"Leisurely romantic comedy with comic types and humor according to the classic pattern, which also gives ironic swipes at the success thinking in modern psychiatry."
