Miriam Margolyes , OBE (born May 18, 1941 in Oxford , Oxfordshire ) is a British - Australian film and theater actress and voice actress .

life and career

Miriam Margolyes was born in Oxford to Ruth Walters and Joseph Margolyes, a doctor. She attended the local Oxford High School and then Newnham College , Cambridge , where she first came into contact with theater. She was a member of the Cambridge University Footlights Dramatic Club .

Margolyes initially worked as a voice actress. Her first leading role was that of Elephant Ethel in Stand Up, Virgin Soldiers (1977). In 1988 she played the role of Flora Finching in the film Klein Dorrit . In the USA she made headlines in 1992 with the comedy Frannies Turn . For her portrayal in Martin Scorsese's historical film Time of Innocence (1993), she was awarded the BAFTA in the category Best Supporting Actress in 1994. She was particularly popular with a younger audience in 1996 as the voice of Aunt Sponge in James and the Giant Peach and through her role as Professor Pomona Sprout in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002) and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 ( 2011) known. In 2004 she starred alongside Geoffrey Rush and Charlize Theron in The Life and Death of Peter Sellers and with Annette Bening , Jeremy Irons and Michael Gambon in Being Julia . She has also appeared in some European co-productions such as Kalman's Secret (1998) and A Touch of Sunshine (1999).

In 2001 Elizabeth II awarded her the title of Officer of the British Empire .

Margolyes has lived with her Australian partner since 1968. She describes herself as homosexual and mentioned her relationships with women repeatedly on BBC Radio 4's Desert Island Discs program in September 2008. She was granted Australian citizenship on Australia Day (January 26) 2013 in Canberra .

Margolyes interrupted her career to care for her ailing mother and financed full-time care for her father. She is an activist for a short-term care charity, Crossroads , and also supports Sense , a charity for deaf-blind people.
