On the road with Mum (Original title: The Guilt Trip ) is an American comedy film from 2012 .
action
Joyce Brewster is a mother who cares a little too much for her son Andrew. She calls him a little too often, constantly giving him advice and bragging about him in front of her friends. As a single mother, she is proud of the trained chemist who is currently trying to set up a business with a new cleaning product that he has developed himself. It just doesn't really work. Andrew's sales presentations are awkward, boring, and too scientific. Nobody seems to be really interested in their detergent. After every failed conversation, he drives home and has to hide his disappointment, whereby his mother gets on his nerves. But as much as she bothers him, he realizes that after his father's death he is all that was left for her. She loves him and also tells him where he got his name from. She was once not allowed to marry her great love, the insurance agent Andrew Margolis, but instead took someone else as husband and gave her son Andrew the name of her great love. Since she has always been lonely since the death of her husband, Andrew decides to jump over his shadow for the sake of his mother and do her something good. He takes her on a sales trip across the country after finding out that Margolis is in San Francisco , where he ultimately wants to see him.
But as soon as he left, he realized that this was probably not such a good idea, because after the first few kilometers his mother began to kill his nerve. Her behavior is intrusive, he is ashamed of her, and after other sales talks also fail, Andrew has to take sales advice from Joyce. But as a scientist, he doesn't want to get advice and hear that his presentation is too factual, complicated and boring. This pattern runs through the rest of the journey, via Tennessee , where a snowstorm forces them to an emergency stop, and temporarily ends in Costco . There, Joyce finally accompanies her son to a sales talk, during which Joyce's suggestions are positively received by the Costco employee, but Andrew's ideas are rejected. Injured and taken by surprise, he yells at the employee, which means that another sales pitch fails. He then tears at his mother in the hotel, saying she should finally give up, whereupon she goes to a bar, deeply hurt by her son's behavior. Plagued by feelings of guilt and a guilty conscience, he follows her, and when he tries to get her back to the hotel room, which the drunken guests present do not agree with at all, an argument breaks out in which Andrew is knocked down.
The next morning, Andrew tries to get along with his mother. He tells her about his really fantastic product, but he fails to market it, and confesses to her that he feels like a failure, also because he has now also lost all of his money. Joyce then supports her son in making his dream of successfully selling his cleaning agent come true. For a cash prize of 100 US dollars , she takes part in a dinner contest in Texas , which she wins with the help of a certain Benjamin Graw, which means that the trip to Las Vegas can continue. But even there, the sales debacle seems to be repeating itself due to Andrews' presentation, which is still too scientific and boring. It wasn't until he took his mother's advice to heart and integrated a human component into the presentation by drinking it as proof that he had developed the healthiest of all cleaning products that everyone was completely enthusiastic and wanted to market Andrew's product.
Eventually they both go to San Francisco to see Andrew Margolis. But instead of him, who died five years earlier, you only find his son. The question of whether he ever talked about his love for Joyce can only be denied by Joyce. Disappointed that she never really meant anything to her great love, Joyce wants to leave. But then the son's sister appears, and when she introduces herself as Joyce, Andrew's mother realizes that Margolis could not forget her either and in memory of her named his daughter after her, just as she did with Andrew.
Reviews
The "credited script" does not offer "a lot of history". And although this little bit of plot is "not always predictable", said the renowned film critic James Berardinelli , there is simply still too "too much familiar". The film would not reinvent the genre of the road movie and move within the given limits. However, since both main actors are "credible in their respective roles" and the chemistry is right, one can occasionally "giggle and laugh now and then".
“Contrary to what the title suggests,” said Stephen Holden of the New York Times , it was not a “satirical farce about domineering mothers and emasculated sons”. According to a “pale script”, a “lovable mother-son street odyssey” was staged as a “mildly funny feel-good love story”.
The lexicon of international films said: "Not every US comedy needs a first-class book, sometimes the chemistry and enthusiasm of the leading actors alone is enough to entertain charmingly for a length of film."
background
Screenwriter Dan Fogelman wrote the screenplay on the basis of a real two-week trip with his mother that took him from New Jersey to Las Vegas. However, his mother died before production began. The script itself went into production in 2009, back then under the title My Mother's Curse . As of mid-2010, Fletcher as the director and Rogen and Streisand as the leading actors were already confirmed. The film was originally due to hit theaters on March 30, 2012. In February 2012, the film was finally renamed The Guilt Trip with an initial release on November 2, 2012 . On December 19, it was finally released in cinemas in Canada and the USA at the same time. By its theatrical release on April 18, 2013 in Germany, the film had grossed a little more than 40 million at box offices worldwide.
The production company Paramount Pictures was so convinced of Streisand's performance that they accidentally released a trailer for the film in which she is listed as a Golden Globe nominee. Instead, just two months later, she received a worst actress nomination for the Golden Raspberry .
