Lorne Michaels (* 17th November 1944 in Toronto , Ontario as Lorne David Lipowitz) is a Canadian - American film producer and screenwriter . He is best known as the creator and producer of the 1975 NBC sketch show Saturday Night Live .

biography

Lorne David Lipowitz was born in Toronto to Jewish parents. He has a younger sister and had a younger brother who died of a brain tumor. He attended Forest Hill Collegiate Institute and then studied at University College Toronto , where he graduated in English in 1966. After graduating, he changed his name to Lorne Michaels and worked for two years at the radio station CBC / Radio-Canada .

In 1968 Michaels moved to Los Angeles , where he worked as a writer on the television series Laugh-In and The Beautiful Phyllis Diller Show and starred with Hart Pomerantz on his own show, The Hart and Lorne Terrific Hour, on Canadian television. In 1975 he created and produced the sketch series NBC's Saturday Night together with Dick Ebersol for the television station NBC , which has been running under the name Saturday Night Live since 1977 . The show, which is broadcast live with a studio audience, quickly became a huge success. For many immensely successful comedians in the United States, the show was and is the starting point of their careers. Michaels still produces Saturday Night Live , as well as being the writer and executive producer on the show.
