The Other Two is an American television series that premiered on January 24, 2019 on Comedy Central . In Germany it has been running on the German branch of Comedy Central since January 17, 2020 . It is about two siblings who have money problems and difficulties getting ahead in their jobs. Her life changes suddenly when her 13 year old brother produces a viral video and is suddenly very famous in the music scene.

The pilot episode was sold to Comedy Central in late 2016. In October of the following year, the station finally ordered a complete season of the series. It is produced by Broadway Video, the production company of Lorne Michaels , who also came up with Saturday Night Live .

On February 11, 2019, the series was extended for a second season. It will no longer air on Comedy Central but will be shown on HBO Max .

action

Brooke Dubek and her brother Cary from New York are now in their twenties and quite dissatisfied with their everyday lives. Brooke used to work as a ballet dancer, but has given up the job and is a not very successful real estate agent in, moreover, she recently ended her relationship with the somewhat humble Lance. Cary is an aspiring actor who mainly works as a waiter and, in one of his few roles, entertains tourists with a flash mob. His agent Skip Schamplin is also dependent on several part-time jobs. Cary is also openly gay and confused, as his roommate Matt is constantly making advances, but claims to be straight . For these reasons, the siblings don't have a lot of money.

Her life changes completely when her 13-year-old brother Chase releases his self-composed song Marry U at Recess on YouTube , which becomes a viral sensation. He and his mother, Pat, who dreams of making a career in Hollywood , move to Manhattan to better organize Chase's (now known as ChaseDreams) appearances in front of the media, recording sessions and video shoots. Brooke and Cary are quite jealous of their brother and often use Chase's fame and fortune for their own purposes, but they are very fond of him and help him in situations in which he is still overwhelmed due to his age, for example when he is a to shoot sexually suggestive video or when confronted with older, scary fans. At the end of the first season, Chase's career seems to be over due to his lack of live talent, but to the horror of his siblings, he is immediately admitted to New York University immediately and unconditionally .

With Chase's fame, Pat is completely up and writing, among other things, a children's book, likes to be a guest on various talk shows and consumes MDMA once at a party . However, she also reveals in a live stream that her husband did not die of cancer, but instead froze to death drunk on the roof. At the end of the first season, her wish to become famous comes true as she receives a her own afternoon talk show that was widely advertised in Times Square

production

Chris Kelly and Sarah Schneider , two screenwriters friend who wrote sketches together for Saturday Night Live , came up with the series in early 2016 and spent a week developing the concept and characters. In an interview with New York , they explained that with The Other Two , they shared both the self-perception and self-doubt that many people in their twenties harbor, as well as elements of current pop culture such as the series Survivor , homosexual men who are very much on Instagram are present, and wanted to deal with Justin Bieber's career, which began at the age of 13. Chase Dubek is also consciously sympathetic and nice towards his siblings. This would undermine the expectations of the audience, as they assumed that Chase would become a "little shit" through his fame. In the course of the series, the viewer would notice that he is actually a "sweet little prisoner of the music industry". In addition, according to Schneider, if he were unsympathetic, his siblings would probably give him up and want nothing more to do with him. But since this is not the case, they would be forced to linger in his world.

In October 2017, Comedy Central announced the cast of Drew Tarver , Heléne Yorke , Case Walker , Ken Marino and Molly Shannon . Walker was discovered by Kelly and Schneider on Instagram and Musical.ly because he had 400,000 followers on the first and a top ten placement on the latter. Heléne Yorke, a Broadway actress and dancer , and Drew Tarver, a comedian and actor, were also personally cast by Kelly and Schneider. They knew Tarver from his performances at the improvisational Upright Citizens Brigade Theater in New York, which they liked. For the female lead, they wanted an actress who could portray vulnerability hidden under a high level of self-confidence, and the audience should also be able to identify with the character's chaotic personality. Kelly and Schneider decided on Yorke on the spur of the moment after seeing her on the Vimeo series High Maintenance . Molly Shannon was hired because of her experience with funny and serious roles, because, according to Schneider and Kelly, her character is very funny, but this comedy is based on real worries, fears and insecurities.

reception

In the Internet Movie Database, the series achieved a rating of 7.2 out of ten stars based on 1534 votes. On Rotten Tomatoes , it received a critic rating of 94 percent based on 33 reviews and an audience rating of 80 percent from 107 votes. At Metacritic , a value of 79 returned 100 points for the series.

“Less silly than Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and more warm-hearted than Difficult People , The Other Two combines a remarkable number of absurd ideas with an even greater number of pop cultural allusions. The better you know your way around, especially with internet phenomena like Insta-Gays or make-up videos by young kids, the more you get your money's worth here. The series is also fun, which is also due to the extremely engaging Tarver and the highly talented comedian Yorke in the lead roles. The fact that The Other Two also manages to incorporate moments of real reflection (for example in matters of internalized homophobia) and at the same time to be coarse and amiable at the same time tops it all off. Or to put it another way: there has hardly been anything funnier lately. "

Bjarne Bock from Serienjunkies.de is of the opinion that The Other Two is not only a "heartfelt settlement" with the superficial internet culture and the pitfalls of celebrity, but also a heartfelt homage to stumbling artists who are not successful. Bock compared the everyday life of ChaseDreams to the plot of the comedy Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping , while the two siblings led a chaotic life in the style of Broad City . This is both a perfect mix and a welcome successor for Broad City as it ended in 2019. Bock closed his criticism with the words that Kelly and Schneider could achieve another big hit with The Other Two , because the series is funny and contemporary and has wonderful characters.

Daniel Fienberg described The Other Two as an "upside down version" of Schitt's Creek , as it is about rich people losing their money. The series offers a "mixed Las Vegas buffet of artificial laughs" from the world of Instagram celebrities. It doesn't offer much depth on celebrity in 2019, but its scope of topics is hard to beat. The choice of these topics is random, but this is offset by the good performance of the actors. He also disliked the fact that the series assumes a great understanding of the audience about pop culture issues, but at the same time explains many jokes. As an example, he gave a detailed allusion to Call Me by Your Name , at which he would have laughed heartily at first, but the explanation that followed would have stopped his laughter. However, not all explanations are bad, as there are also many well-placed allusions to previous gags in the ten episodes. In addition, Yorke and Tarver are not subtle, but good in their roles, because Tarver can exploit his comedic talent and Tarver can show the negative sides of their character. Fienberg liked the dramatic moments better than the comic ones, as the latter consisted primarily of “self-forgotten humiliations and unrealistic embarrassments”. Fienberg was also positive about Yorke's, and especially Shannon's, ability to switch well between the comical and serious scenes. Fienberg concluded that although he was not in the target audience of the series, it would still be well received by many viewers.

Caroline Framke wrote in Variety that series that poke fun at Internet celebrity are often "extremely embarrassing" rather than funny. This is because the rapidly changing whims of the internet make it virtually impossible to guess what the next big online trend will be. However, the scriptwriters recognize this challenge and try to overcome it. The concept of a 13-year-old who becomes famous overnight like Justin Bieber sounds a little out of date at first. However, the series manages to remain timeless by not relying on clichés to portray the absurdity of the situation, but rather on the wit of the scriptwriters. The Other Two keep two modes in balance. One is the satirical view of show business, which has already been treated "ad nauseam" on television. Even with the good supporting actors, the series fails to look at the negative aspects of Chase's meteoric rise from a new angle. Therefore, the best gags of the series would not have to do with Chase, but with Cary's everyday life, who often grapples with the "humiliating trials and tribulations" of an unsuccessful gay actor. The differences between unsuccessful gay and straight actors would also be explained with bite. In addition, despite its “high acidity”, the series does not exaggerate and never becomes “too bitter”. Brooke and Cary stayed grounded as they are the only ones who remember that Chase was just a kid and that there is more to life than dreaming.

Molly Shannon was nominated for a Critics' Choice Television Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy TV Series for her performance in 2020 . In the same year, the series itself received a nomination for Best Comedy Series at the GLAAD Media Awards .
