action

The plot follows two Jewish girls in their twenties who have to endure everyday mishaps between carelessness and frivolity in the jungle of the big city of New York City . characters

main characters

Ilana Wexler

Ilana is a 22-year-old slacker and marijuana enthusiast who lives out her self-centered antics without being perturbed by the reactions of others. She works for an inconspicuous sales company called Deals Deals Deals , but where she hardly performs and often takes hours of breaks. She is disregarded by her employees because of her lazy attitude, but her submissive boss Derek leaves her employed. She lives with the immigrant Jaimé and has a sexual relationship with her and Abbis friend Lincoln - a dentist. Although Ilana claims, to Lincoln's displeasure, that the relationship is purely physical, she often shows caring feelings for him. Compared to her best friend Abbi, Ilana is a free spirit and sexually more open, but each of her escapades has unforeseen consequences that always affect Abbi, who is reluctantly drawn into Ilana's plans.

Abbi Abrams

Abbi is a 25 year old who works as a simple supervisor at a gym called Soulstice . She hates her job and thinks of herself well enough to be a coach. She also strives for a career as an artist and dreams of leaving the fitness center and being able to make a living from art. Abbi tries to find a balance between responsibility and independence and at the same time to be freedom-loving like Ilana. Your roommate is never seen, but has a parasitic friend (Bevers) who is always around. Abbi is in love with her neighbor Jeremy, but manages to embarrass herself every time she meets him. Like her best friend, she is not averse to smoking weed, but does so less often.

Minor characters

  • Dr. Lincoln Rice is a successful pediatric dentist with whom Ilana has a sexual relationship. He has romantic feelings for Ilana and wants to take their relationship to the next level, but is unsuccessful. He's a fun, easygoing guy who loves to play games and tell jokes to his patients. He has a loyal friendship with Abbi .
  • Matt Bevers is Abbis' friend (absent from all sides). He's a messy, disgusting parasite and a constant nuisance to Abbi. Nevertheless, every now and then he is shown with a friendly, sensitive side.
  • Jeremy Santos is Abbi's neighbor across the hall. He is polite and easy-going, but his mere presence leads Abbi to nervous, uncontrolled behavior.
  • Jaime Castro is Ilana drug deal forming , gay roommate. Jaimé is a Venezuelan immigrant who shows extreme guilt towards his friends, even for minor offenses.
  • Trey is Abbi's boss at Soulstice . He is an avid health and fitness fan. Although a nice guy in himself, he doesn't notice Abbi's enthusiasm for a coaching position and orders her to do menial jobs - running gags include removing pubic hair or vomit from the locker room.
  • Derek is Ilana's boss at the sales company. He acts very half-heartedly when dealing with Ilana's lack of commitment and often makes a submissive impression.
  • Nicole is an employee of Ilana who takes her job very seriously and secretly documents Ilana's office missteps.

production

Glazer and Jacobson met at the Upright Citizens Brigade , an improvisation and sketch comedy group. In February 2010 they started their own web series, which became a hit with the public. Amy Poehler became aware of the series and became the producer of the TV series. When Glazer and Jacobson wrote the pilot What a Wonderful World , their characters were Evelyn Wexler and Carly Abrams, but they ended up using their real first names, Ilana and Abbi. The two subsequently acted as screenwriters and wrote about half of all episodes in the first two seasons.

reception

Reviews

The online aggregator Metacritic certified season one largely positive reviews ("generally favorable reviews") with a score of 75 out of 100, based on 14 reviews. At Rotten Tomatoes , the first season achieved a rating of 96% with the consensus “From its talented producers to its clever writing and superb leads, Broad City boasts an uncommonly fine pedigree.” (“From its talented producers to its clever script and the Broad City can boast of an unusually fine pedigree. ”). The AV Club critic Caroline Framke wrote that Broad City , despite its "well-trodden premise," was worth seeing. In addition, the series is said to be of "remarkable self-control", even in its first episode. The same website named Broad City's first season the second best TV series of the year in 2014.

The Wall Street Journal already referred to the show in its online edition as "Sneak Attack Feminism" (" feminist surprise attack"). Critic Megan Angelo quoted Abbi Jacobson: “If you watch one of our episodes, there's not a big message, but if you watch all of them, I think, they're empowering to women.” (“If you watch one of our episodes, is not a big statement, but in sum, I believe, they are a strengthening of women. ").

Entertainment Weekly's Karen Valby found the show to be "deeply weird, weirdly sweet and completely hilarious comedy" ("very bizarre, weirdly cute and hilarious"). Despite the good reviews, only an average of 914,000 viewers were interested in the start of series production.

The reviews for season two were even better. On Metacritic this achieved a value of 89 out of 100, which means "universal acclaim". At Rotten Tomatoes, 100% of the reviews it received were positive. The consensus is “Led by two of the funniest women on TV, Broad City uses its stars' vibrant chemistry to lend an element of authenticity to the show's chaotic yet enlightening brand of comedy” (“Led by two of the funniest women on TV, uses Broad City uses the vibrant chemistry of its performers to give authenticity to the show's chaotic but enlightening comedy brand. ”).

The New Yorker introduced the term "Id Girls" in connection with the two girls. This is a corruption of the It girl . "Id" is the English expression for Freud's "It" , which in psychoanalysis describes the unconscious, instinctual part of a person.

Broad Fucking City t-shirt incident

On March 23, 2015, college student Daniel Podolsky was evicted from a Southwest Airlines plane in St. Louis after a gatekeeper found his "Broad Fucking City" t-shirt offensive. He had received the t-shirt from Comedy Central as part of an SXSW event. The incident immediately hit the local media and was picked up by Glenn Beck's TheBlaze , which was followed by coverage of the BuzzFeed , CNN and Vice News websites . The viral spread culminated in the record as a Moment of Zen in The Daily Show . Ilana Glazer showed her sympathy by posting the tweet “I love you, daniel podolsky” along with a link to his story.
