Portlandia is an American satire - television series , which since 2010 by Carrie Brownstein , vocalist and guitarist of Sleater-Kinney , and Fred Armisen ( Saturday Night Live is produced). The two embody different characters in the series. With the last episode of the eighth season, the series ended on March 22, 2018.
concept
In the series, the glocal color of the Portland hipsters and the creative and alternative scene are portrayed and satirized in short skits . Since such scenes exist in every metropolis in the western hemisphere and have great similarities due to their international orientation, the series is also received outside of Portland.
It is based on the web series ThunderAnt , which has been played and produced by Carrie Brownstein and Fred Armisen since around 2006.
The main characters at Portlandia are Carrie Brownstein and Fred Armisen . They embody a wide variety of Portland characters and stereotypes, which are made clear through makeup and acting. In addition to the two, a number of internationally known Portland actors, filmmakers, athletes and all-rounders are used such as the Portland Mayor Sam Adams (assistant to the mayor), the actors Jason Sudeikis , Steve Buscemi , Kyle MacLachlan (Mayor), Aubrey Plaza , Selma Blair , Kumail Nanjiani, Edie McClurg , Heather Graham , Nick Kroll , Gus Van Sant (musician and filmmaker), Olivia Wilde , Chloë Sevigny , Michael Nesmith , Tim Robbins, Martina Navratilova , Jeff Goldblum and others.
Due to the fact that Carrie Brownstein is in the Portland indie scene, a number of musicians are involved as guest stars - some with musical contributions - at Portlandia: Josh Homme from Queens of the Stone Age , Eddie Vedder from Pearl Jam , J Mascis from Dinosaur Jr . , Jenny Conlee and Colin Meloy of The Decemberists , James Mercer , frontman of The Shins, Corin Tucker (singer and guitarist of Sleater Kinney ), Joanna Bolme ( Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks ), Zac Pennington (Parenthetical Girls), the Singer / Songwriters Aimee Mann and Sarah McLachlan , Jack White of the White Stripes , Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse and others.
production
Production of the first season began in August 2010 and ended in September of the same year. The budget for the first season was under $ 1 million .
Episode structure
The intro is usually a sketch that quotes a certain television format and ironizes it in the spirit of the Portlandia theme. The first episode of the first season features a music video titled "Dream of the 90's" by Jason from LA ( Fred Armisen ). The second episode begins with a parody of interior design programs - 2 artists spray, paint, embroider, scratch songbirds on the goods in a boutique to give them a fresher and more artistic impression. The intro of Episode 4 ironically ironizes an MTV trailer for a festival. Episode 6 starts with an image film on the subject of "unemployment".
This is followed by the Portlandia trailer, musically accompanied by Feel It All Around by Washed Out . Then the cover story begins, which runs narrative in parts through the entire episode and follows a plot. In between there are other skits that have no direct reference to the cover story, but which continue in loose succession beyond the episodes. The series as a whole does not follow a chronologically progressing plot, but rather strings together descriptions of the state of the indie scene, the skits and cover stories are self-contained. The connection is established through the distinctive figures. Before the penultimate sketch, there is another short Portlandia trailer. The last sketch is part of the cover story. The end credits with the credits follow.
