Colin Patrick Henry Meloy (born October 5, 1974 in Helena , Montana , United States ) is the front singer and songwriter of the folk rock band The Decemberists from Portland , Oregon . In addition to singing, he plays acoustic guitar , twelve-string guitar , electric guitar , bouzouki and percussion . In 2004 Meloy wrote a 160-page book on The Replacements' third album Let It Be , as part of the 33 ⅓ series.

Personal

Meloy was born on October 5, 1974 in Helena, Montana. His sister is Maile Meloy , a writer who frequently writes for The New Yorker . He first attended the University of Oregon before going to the University of Montana - Missoula , where he graduated with a degree in creative writing . Shortly thereafter, he moved to Portland, where he met his future band members Jenny Conlee and Nate Query . Before founding The Decemberists, Meloy was the lead singer and songwriter for Happy Cactus and Tarkio, both indie / folk bands from Montana . On February 24, 2006, he and his wife Carson Ellis , who had the same birthday, had a son. When she was two and a half, her son was diagnosed with autism . Ellis is also a graphic designer for The Decemberists.

His first novel, Wildwood , was published in 2011 and was illustrated by his wife.

Musical career

In 2005 Meloy completed his first solo tour, his self-released EP Colin Meloy Sings Morrissey , the six Morrissey - Cover includes to promote . Only 1,000 copies were made and only sold during the tour. Meloy went on a second solo tour in January 2006, playing with Laura Veirs and Amy Annelle . On this tour he sold an EP with covers by Shirley Collins . This tour later served as the basis for a live album .

Meloy contributed an online bonus track to Lavender Diamond's album Imagine Our Love . He played a solo version of Oh No .

He performed another US tour in April 2008. At the same time Meloy released his first live album, Colin Meloy Sings Live! , under the label Kill Rock Stars . Singer-songwriter Laura Gibson played before his performances. As with previous EPs, Meloy sold the Colin Meloy Sings Sam Cooke EP , a collection of five Sam Cooke covers, only during the tour.

Meloy sang the songs Cemetery Row and Twilight Distillery on The Minus 5 's 2006 album of the same name. Meloy also covered Elliott Smith 's Clementine for a children's charity compilation by Portland, Oregon artists. In mid-2006 he contributed the track Lazy Little Ada for the kill rock stars compilation The Sound the Hare Heard . In 2007, Meloy voiced a character in the US animated series Lil 'Bush . He appeared with Charlie Salas-Humara in the music video for A Pillar of Salt by The Thermals . In 2011 Colin Meloy made a guest appearance on the comedy series Portlandia as a band member of Echo Echo.
