action
The Crane Wife is an old Japanese legend. A poor man finds an injured crane, takes it home and nurses it back to health. After he releases the crane, a woman comes to his front door. He falls in love with the woman and marries her a little later. Since they are both very poor, his wife offers to sew miraculous dresses from silk and sell them at the market - but only if he promises never to watch her make them. The clothes sell well and the man demands that his wife weave more than before. The more his greed for wealth increases, the worse his wife is. One day he watches her making the clothes. However, it is not his wife who is sitting at the loom, but a crane plucking out its own feathers. When he sees the man, he flies away and never comes back.
Colin Meloy heard the story and decided to write music for it.
