Castaways and Cutouts is the debut album by the US band The Decemberists . It was released on May 21, 2002 on Hush Records and again on May 6, 2003 on Kill Rock Stars . The name of the album is taken from a line of lyrics on the track California One / Youth and Beauty Brigade and means "castaways and fuses".
The album cover was created by the artist Carson Ellis , the then girlfriend and current wife of Colin Meloy , who was responsible for all album covers for the band.
This is the only full album with Ezra Holbrook playing the drums. He also played 5 songs on the EP and provided backing vocals for The Crane Wife .
