Carson Ellis

Carson Friedman Ellis (born October 5, 1975 in Vancouver , Canada ) is an American artist and writer from Portland (Oregon) . She is known for her illustrations of children's books and album covers . In 2016 she received a Caldecott Honor Award for her picture book Wazn Teez? ( English Du Iz Tak? ).

Ellis began her artistic career (illustrations and drawings) studying painting at the University of Montana - Missoula . She made her first works of fine art in San Francisco . Ellis had his first solo exhibition of oil paintings in a gallery in San José, California . Her first illustrations were after the beginning of the relationship with the musician Colin Meloy , whom she met at the University of Montana, concert posters for his college band Tarkio. This was followed by further illustrative work for Meloy's indie folk band The Decemberists , for whom she has designed album covers, t-shirts , website elements, posters and stage sets since it was founded in 2001 . Their covers illustrate the Decemberists albums, Castaways and Cutouts (2002), Her Majesty the Decemberists (2003), The Crane Wife (2006), The Hazards of Love (2009) and What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World (2015) . There are also further EP and single covers . At the 2016 Grammy Awards , Ellis was nominated for Best Package Box or Limited Edition for her work on the What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World deluxe box set . She also created artworks for Laura Veirs and Weezer .

In addition to her artistic activities in music Ellis drew illustrations for the New York Times -Bestseller The Mysterious Benedict Society ( The Mysterious Benedict Society , 2007) by Trenton Lee Stewart and The Composer Is Dead (2009) by Lemony Snicket . In 2010 she won the Society of Illustrators Silver Medal for her work in Florence Parry Heide's Dillweed's Revenge: A Deadly Dose of Magic (2010).

Together with her husband Colin Meloy, Ellis published the young novel and New York Times bestseller Wildwood in 2011 - the first part of the fantasy novel series The Wildwood Chronicles . While Meloy was writing the text, Ellis designed the illustrations. A year later, the second part appeared, Wildwood - The Secret Under the Forest (Under Wildwood) and in 2014 with Wildwood: The Enchanted Prince (Wildwood Imperium) the final of the trilogy, for which she also received a silver medal from the Society of Illustrators. Ellis took inspiration for the artistic design from illustrators such as Pauline Baynes ( The Chronicles of Narnia ) and the drawings by Ernest Shepard in The Wind in the Willows .

In 2015 Ellis published with home (Home) her first picture book , in which she addition to the illustrations, also wrote the text. The book is about different houses around the world. In 2016 she published her second children's book, Wazn Teez? (You Iz Tak?) At Candlewick Press.

On October 24, 2017, the children's and youth book The Whiz Mob and the Grenadine Kid was published by Balzer + Bray together with Meloy .

At the end of November 2017, the board game Illimat by the game author Keith Baker and the band The Decemberists was published by Twogether Studios, which was illustrated by Ellis.

Personal

Carson Ellis is married to musician Colin Meloy, whom she met in college while designing the posters for his alternative country band Tarkio. She has two children with Meloy: Henry "Hank" Meloy and Milo Cannonball Meloy. Both parents speak openly about Hank's life with Asperger's Syndrome .
