What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World received mostly positive reviews. In the rating aggregator Metacritic , the album received 77/100 points from critics and an 8.1 from website visitors. The Boston Globe described the album as one of the band's most entertaining. The New York Times noted that What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World “hits the tune of pop conciseness and maturity,” building on the working elements from its predecessor The King Is Dead . "Lyrically, there are fewer thistles , minarets and litters - and musically less rambling excesses - than the old, distinctive Decemberists style." Pitchfork's Jeremy D. Larson complained about the album's lengthy length and low ambition, but saw the listeners Get to know Colin Meloy more personally than ever. In particular, the first single Make You Better is a “great anthem”.
Bruno Jaschke from the Wiener Zeitung wrote that the album “uses the utmost minimum of production effort and just because of this it gains an almost spiritual quality”. Kai Butterweck from laut.de called What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World “a real bang”. In contrast to this, Andreas Borcholte from Spiegel Online didn’t care about the album "in its sedate, rampant, cheapness".
