Meuse-Scheldt Canal

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Maas-Schelde Canal , also Kanaal Bocholt-Herentals or Kempen Canal, connects the Albert Canal near Herentals with the Zuid-Willemsvaart near Bocholt in Belgium . It was opened in 1846 after three years of construction. It connected the Liège industrial area with the Antwerp port without crossing the border and allowed the dry Kempen to be irrigated . The Kanaal naar Beverlo branches off to the west of Lommel , a branch canal for the development of the military training area Kamp van Beverlo , which ends in the garrison town of Leopoldsburg .

Its role was significant enough that the Kempenaars inland waterway class was derived from its dimensions .

In 1928 the canal was widened, with the discovery of shale coal deposits that were used during World War II; with the opening of the Albert Canal in 1940, which allowed a shorter connection between Liège and Antwerp, it lost its rank. In 1944 he was an important reference point for the Allied Operation Garden .
