Later with Jools Holland

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Later with Jools Holland is a television program of contemporary music of the British broadcaster BBC . The series is moderated by Jools Holland . Both established musicians and newcomers are presented in each episode, ranging from solo artists to bands to larger ensembles and orchestras and spanning many styles .

The series is a spin-off of the Late Show and has been a firmly established program on BBC Two's late-night program since October 9, 1992 , currently every Friday. Since September 2008 it has also been broadcast on BBC HD . It was first seen on German-language television on January 2, 2007 on the ZDFtheaterkanal ; after the channel was redesigned, it was broadcast regularly since May 9, 2011 as Later with Jools on ZDFkultur .

Shipment concept

The program is characterized by a great variety of music: from pop and rock to jazz and indie music to world music , all styles are represented. Around five music groups and / or solo artists appear for each other and for a small studio audience, Jools Holland guides through the show and interviews one or more artists. Each episode begins with a short jam session with all guests, during which the unusual layout of the studio is particularly well illustrated by means of a 360 ° camera panning : The stages for the various bands are arranged in a circle, with the audience sitting between them, the area inside Inside the circle serves as a moderation platform. Occasionally, Holland accompanies individual guests on the grand piano or piano during the program .

Later Live with Jools Holland

Since November 11, 2008, BBC Two has been broadcasting a half-hour live broadcast in advance of the recorded show . Later Live with Jools Holland is broadcast on Tuesdays and is also recorded for the Friday hour-long Later with Jools Holland . For the longer broadcast format, the recording continues after the live broadcast has ended.

Special programs

Occasional special programs in the series devote an entire program to a major artist or group under the title Later presents . So far, this includes REM , Oasis and Radiohead , who each designed the entire one-hour show. The show is also moderated by Holland and takes place in a similarly furnished studio.

At every turn of the year since January 1, 1994, BBC Two shows a special called Jools' Annual Hootenanny . This has also been broadcast simultaneously on BBC HD since 2008.

Best-of programs are called A Little Later .

  8. The English word "Hootenanny" colloquially describes, on the one hand, an informal togetherness in folk music , often involving the audience, and, on the other hand, an informal festival, a party. In the earliest documented usage, late 1920s, it means something like “thing-nonsense”; the origin of the word is unknown. ( Compare 1: hootenanny. In: Online Etymology Dictionary.
