Stephen Malkmus
Stephen Joseph Malkmus (born May 30, 1966 in Santa Monica, California ) is an American musician , guitarist and songwriter , who became known as the front man of the indie rock band Pavement and currently leads Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks .
biography
Stephen Malkmus was born in Santa Monica to an insurance broker and grew up in Stockton, Northern California, from the age of 8 . He attended Tokay High School in nearby Lodi . As a teenager he taught himself to play guitar based on music recordings by Jimi Hendrix and played in several local punk bands; Among his childhood friends was the later Pavement guitarist Scott Kannberg . Malkmus studied history at the University of Virginia . During his studies he worked as a DJ at the college radio station WTJU and got to know his fellow musician David Berman and the later Yo La Tengo bassist James McNew. Working as a security guard at the Whitney Museum of American Art , he met the later Pavement drummer Bob Nastanovich know. After graduating, he founded Pavement with Scott Kannberg in 1989 and the group The Silver Jews with David Berman . In 1996 he starred alongside Janeane Garofalo in the film Sweethearts . In 1997 Malkmus released the live cover album Marquee Mark with members of the band Silkworm under the name The Crust Brothers , on which five Bob Dylan songs can be heard.
After separating from Pavement, Malkmus played with Kim Gordon , Ikue Mori , Thurston Moore and Jim O'Rourke for a short time under the name Kim's Bedroom from 1999 , but the group did not release any records.
In 2000 Malkmus recorded his first solo album. He was supported by the Decemberists drummer John Moen and bassist Joanna Bolme, who then also played in the band Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks . Two more albums followed, each of which received mostly positive reviews in media such as Pitchfork Media . Both albums made it into the Billboard charts , with Pig Lib reaching number 97 of the Top 100. On March 7, 2008 Malkmus' album Real Emotional Trash was released , on which the drummer Janet Weiss ( Sleater-Kinney ) can be heard instead of John Moen .
Malkmus married in 2006, has two daughters and lives in Portland, Oregon . Since August 2011 Malkmus has lived temporarily with his family in Berlin. During this time he performed the album Ege Bamyasi by the band Can together with Sebastian Blume (synthesizer), Felix Hedderich (bass), Jan Philipp Janzen (drums) and Phillip Tielsch (guitar) from the band Von Spar .
In 2016, he contributed the theme song and music to Will Arnett's Netflix series Flaked .
In March 2019, after many years of working with Groove Denied , Malkmus released his first solo album without an accompanying musician. On the album he approached electronic music . Traditional Techniques followed in the following year , which in turn is more strongly influenced by folk and was created with the support of guitarists Chris Funk ( The Decemberists ) and Matt Sweeney ( Zwan ).
Equipment
During his time at Pavement, Malkmus mainly used a Fender Stratocaster . He also played a Fender Jazzmaster , a Gibson Les Paul , a Gibson SG and a similar Guild S-100. He also played a Danelectro Silvertone.
His main amplifiers are a 1970s Marshall 4x12 Cabinet and an Orange Amplifiers Retro 50 50-Watt Vintage Tube Guitar Amp Head. He also uses various Fender and Marshall amplifiers as well as numerous effects pedals live.
