life and career

Kannberg was born and raised in Stockton, Northern California. In 1989 he founded the band Pavement with his childhood friend Stephen Malkmus , which was influenced by their mutual preference for independent bands such as Sonic Youth , The Fall or the Pixies . Kannberg later also gave New Zealand alternative bands such as The Clean or Sneaky Feelings as inspiration. Kannberg had already chosen the pseudonym Spiral Stairs and Malkmus SM for their first published EPs and their debut album Slanted and Enchanted . Although the majority of the songs were written by his bandmate and lead singer Malkmus, the guitarist and background singer Kannberg also wrote and sang songs sporadically. These songs are Painted Soldiers , Hit the Plane Down , Kennel District , Date with IKEA, and Passat Dream . Due to artistic differences between Kannberg and Malkmus, Pavement broke up in 1999.

In the same year, Kannberg founded the group Preston School of Industry , with which he released two LPs in the early 2000s. However, the group has been inactive since 2004.
