Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks is an American rock band from Portland , consisting of Stephen Malkmus , Mike Clark, Joanna Bolme and Jake Morris, and formed in 2000. Frontman Malkmus was previously the songwriter, singer and guitarist for Pavement , one of the most influential indie rock groups of the 1990s.

After Pavement broke up on November 20, 1999, Malkmus formed the Jicks by hiring Joanna Bolme, Mike Clark and John Moen. Justine Frischmann from Elastica was interviewed as guitarist, but could not take part in the band activities in time. Originally Malkmus wanted to call the bands The Jicks , but the music label Matador Records prevailed with Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks . (The debut album and Faith the Truth even hide the band name and name the band only Stephen Malkmus , although all band members participated in the recordings.) The band's first album was released on February 13, 2001 and is simply called Stephen Malkmus . Malkmus wrote some of the songs while still at Pavement.

The second album is called Pig Lib and was released in 2003. The songs are longer, seem psychedelic and contain extensive, complex guitar solos. The Jicks played the same year as the opening act for Radiohead on their USA tour. The All Tomorrow's Parties (festival) "The Director's Cut Weekend Two" from April 2-4, 2004 was curated by Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks and Sonic Youth .

The third album Face the Truth was released in 2005.

After John Moen started playing full-time with the Decemberists in 2006, Janet Weiss ( Quasi , Sleater-Kinney ) joined the Jicks.

The fourth album called Real Emotional Trash was released on March 4th, 2008 and was very well received.

Joanna Bolme made a guest appearance in 2011 on the comedy series Portlandia as the wife of the Mayor of Portland (Ep. 4/1).

The fifth album of the Jicks Mirror Traffic was released on August 23, 2011, which was produced by Beck Hansen . Shortly before its appearance, Janet Weiss got out and Jake Morris of the Portland band The Joggers took her place.
