Elastica was an alternative rock band from Great Britain . The band's greatest success reached number 1 on the British album charts with their first album, Elastica .
history
Elastica was founded in October 1992 by former Suede members Justine Frischmann and Justin Welch. Bassist Annie Holland and guitarist Donna Matthews joined them. Their first single was actively promoted by BBC DJs, and they landed a label deal with Deceptive Records. The band reached the peak of their fame in 1995 with their debut album, which at the time became the fastest-selling debut album ever in Great Britain and rose to number one in the charts. Three of the four released singles reached the top 20 there despite their rather unconventional sound and made the band known internationally, especially among listeners of alternative rock.
In 1995 the band continued to play at the Glastonbury Festival and achieved gold status with their debut album in the USA as well as in Great Britain before . In 1996 the band began recording a second album. There were several reshuffles and delays in the planned publication. In 1999 only one EP was finally released with six songs that were created during the interrupted album recordings. In the same year there were live performances for the first time. In 2000, the second album The Menace was released , but it could no longer match the great success of the first album and only reached number 24 in the UK charts. In September 2001, Elastica announced its liquidation.
style
Because of the Britpop wave in the mid-1990s and the origins of some of its members, Elastica is occasionally placed in this segment. Due to numerous other stylistic influences and the more unconventional sound of the band than one is used to from typical Britpop formations, Elastica is often categorized as post-punk or generally as alternative rock .
