Slanted and Enchanted is the debut album by the American rock band Pavement . It was released in April 1992 on the Matador Records and Big Cat Records labels .

History of origin

Slanted and Enchanted was recorded for the most part in Drummer Gary Young's garage studio in Stockton , California called Louder Than You Think from January 13-20 , 1991. The song Here , however, was recorded on December 24, 1990 in New York City . The production cost is $ 800. It is the only album by Pavement that was created in the original line-up (Stephen Malkmus, Scott Kannberg, Gary Young), the later members Mark Ibold and Bob Nastanovich only joined the band during the recording, with Nastanovich helping out as a clock for the nervous Young. The drummer, considered unreliable , was replaced by Steve West, a friend of Malkmus, before the recordings for the successor to Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain .

An early, unfinished version of the album was already delivered to critics on compact cassette in 1991 .

Others

The name of the album comes from a title of a cartoon by David Berman, front man of the Silver Jews. It is also a nod to a line in the poem Kubla Khan by Samuel Taylor Coleridge .

The album cover pays homage to the cover of Keyboard Kapers (1963) by the piano duo Ferrante & Teicher .

By 2007 150,000 copies of the album had been sold.

Music videos were shot for the songs Here and Perfume-V , but they rarely played on music television and were later republished on Slow Century DVD.

Frontman Stephen Malkmus thinks Slanted and Enchanted is the band's best album:

"Our records are more attitude and style, sort of in a punk way. We're good in the same way, the strokes are good. I think Slanted and Enchanted probably is the best record we made, only because it's less self-conscious and has an unrepeatable energy about it. "

Time magazine included the debut in the selection of the 100 most important albums.

The US-American music magazine Blender awarded the title of "best indie album of all time" to Slanted and Enchanted .

“The sound is, as you can imagine, rough and uncouth. Young's drums sound like cardboard, and the guitar is often very distorted. Slanted ... is also an innovative record in which elements of free jazz are playfully woven in, while the lyrics of Malkmus are more of a cryptic nature. All songs are characterized by honesty and strong emotionality. When listening to the wonderful opener “Summer Babe”, frustration and longing can be perceived; “Zurich Is Stained” is characterized by a sense of hopelessness. "We were young and naive and needed something to believe in." Despite the rough edges and the opaque lyrics, it's still a perfect album. "

- Sophie Harris

“The eruptive, carefree nerdy and sometimes deeply sad part of their music has not lost any of its obscure beauty to this day. And not only women have fallen for this acoustic aphrodisiac. Men have also allowed themselves to be infected by Pavement - and sometimes sooner, sometimes later they gave birth to babies, which they then gave such beautiful names as Sebadoh , Beck or Weezer . "

- Bettina Dunkel

The album was included in the 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die .
