Ferrante & Teicher was an American piano duo from the 1950s to 1980s.
history
The duo were Louis Milton Teicher and Arthur Ferrante . The two had attended the Juilliard School in New York City and studied music (piano) with Carl Friedberg . Their collaboration as a duo began in 1947 and from 1952 they also produced records . They became known for their interpretations of the theme songs from films such as Das Appartement (their first millionaire success), West Side Story ("Tonight") and Midnight Cowboy . With the theme melody for Exodus , Ernest Gold's Oscar-winning theme melody, Ferrante & Teicher had their second million-dollar success.
Ferrante & Teicher experimented with their pianos by inserting objects into the strings , such as sandpaper strips, pencils, rubber, wooden blocks, metal rods, chains or glass to change the tones. This enabled the duo to produce a variety of bizarre sound effects. They also stepped on their pianos during their performances and operated the strings with their hands.
In 1989, Ferrante and Teicher appeared for the last time and then retired to the west coast of Florida . In a career spanning more than 40 years, they had produced around 150 albums, sold around 90 million records worldwide and performed around 5,200 live performances.
Louis Teicher died of a heart attack on August 3, 2008, Arthur Ferrante on September 19, 2009.
