Carl Rudolph Hermann Friedberg (born September 18, 1872 in Bingen ; † September 9, 1955 in Meran ) was a German pianist and music teacher of the Jewish faith.

He was the son of Eduard Friedberg (1837–1937) and Elisa Landau (1844–1926), both from Bingen. The Friedbergs had been in wine shops since 1700.

Friedberg studied from 1883 to 1887 at the Hoch Conservatory with James Kwast and was then a student of Clara Schumann for two years . He made his orchestral debut in 1892 with the Vienna Philharmonic under the direction of Gustav Mahler . In the following year he got a job as a piano teacher at the Hoch Conservatory, which he held until 1904. He then taught at the Rheinische Musikschule in Cologne until 1914 .

In 1914 he made his debut as a pianist at New York's Carnegie Hall . The outbreak of World War I prevented his return to Germany, and he went on concert tours through the USA and, from 1916, taught the master class for piano at the Institute for Musical Arts , as the successor to Rudolph Ganz , which later became part of the Juilliard School of Music . In 1918 he went to Germany, where he replaced Artur Schnabel in the Schnabel / Flesch / Becker trio and lived as a pianist in Munich. In 1927 Frank Damrosch brought him back to the Institute of Musical Arts as a teacher for advanced piano students. In the spring of 1922, he organized a Brahms cycle on three evenings in Munich with Gerda Friedberg (soprano), Helene Zimmermann (violin) and Karl Wagner (clarinet). His numerous students included u. a. William Masselos , Ernst Freudenthal , Ilse Fromm , Maro Ajemian , Malcolm Frager , Jeanne Therrien , Jane Carlson , Bruce Hungerford , Percy Grainger , Ethel Leginska , Yaltah Menuhin , Elly Ney , Erwin Schulhoff and Jascha Zayde .

In 1953 Friedberg recorded some of Robert Schumann's works , including the Symphonic Etudes and the Romance in F sharp major. In 1954 he visited Europe for the first time since the outbreak of World War II.

In 1955, at the age of 82, he planned a concert tour in Europe. An ocean liner took him to Italy, but he got pneumonia on board. He went to Meran (Meran) for a cure, where he died and was buried.
