Hugo Becker (cellist)
Hugo Becker (born February 13, 1863 in Strasbourg , † June 30, 1941 in Geiselgasteig ) was a German cellist , cello teacher and composer .
Life
Becker received violin and later cello lessons from his father Jean Becker and was a cellist at the Mannheim court orchestra at the age of fifteen . He studied with Alfredo Piatti , Jules de Swert and in Dresden with Friedrich Grützmacher . From 1884 he was solo cellist at the theater orchestra in Frankfurt am Main and cello teacher at the Hoch Conservatory . Clara Schumann was one of his colleagues there .
He also went on concert tours, including through the USA , and played in a piano trio with Eugène Ysaÿe and Ferruccio Busoni , and later with Carl Flesch and Artur Schnabel .
In addition to a suite, he composed a cello concerto and works for cello with piano accompaniment. His students included Enrico Mainardi , Paul Grümmer , Beatrice Harrison , Gregor Piatigorsky and Herbert Walenn .
