The Brixton Academy (Officially O 2 Academy Brixton ) is an event venue in Brixton , London . It was built in 1929 according to the plans of the architects Thomas Somerford and EA Stone and initially served as a cinema under the name "The Astoria". The Astoria closed in 1972 and was reopened as a concert hall under the name "Sundown Center" in the same year, but it was closed again after four months due to a lack of success. There were plans to demolish the building, but they were abandoned. In 1981 it was reopened as a concert hall, but closed again in 1982 due to financial problems. In 1983 Simon Parkes bought the building for £ 1 and opened it under the name Brixton Academy. In 1995 he sold the hall to the McKenzie Group, which completely renovated it and continues to operate it today.

In the Brixton Academy numerous live albums were recorded by well-known bands. Artists such as Wham! , Beyoncé , Bon Jovi , Bullet for My Valentine , Coldplay , Dido , Elton John , Faith No More , Katy Perry , Korn , Metallica , Prince and Queen gave concerts there.

The hall has an audience capacity of 4,921 seats.
