history

The Verlaines were founded in Dunedin, New Zealand in late 1980 . Founding members were Graeme Downes ( guitar , vocals ), Craig Easton (guitar, vocals), Greg Kerr ( drums ), Phillip Higham ( bass ) and Anita Pillai ( keyboard ). In the years that followed, the band's line-ups changed constantly . Later members were bassists Jane Dodd , Mike Stoodley and Russell Fleming ; the drummers Alain Haig , Caroline Easther , Robbie Yeats , Gregg Cairns and Darren Stedman and the guitarist Paul Winders . The only constant member of the band to date is Graeme Downes.

The Verlaines' music was published by the New Zealand label Flying Nun Records in the 1980s . The band was a typical representative of the Dunedin sound at this time . Their first release was three songs on the legendary 1981 Dunedin Double EP .

The Verlaines recorded nine studio albums between 1985 and today. There was a ten-year break between the sixth Over the Moon (1997) and the seventh album Pot Boiler (2007), during which Graeme Downes released his solo album Hammers and Anvils and devoted himself to his academic career. The Verlaines have not reached any place in the charts in their band history.
