The Yarwun alumina refinery is ten kilometers northwest of Gladstone , a port city in Queensland, Australia . The refinery is wholly owned by Rio Tinto Alcan , a wholly-owned subsidiary of the global mining group Rio Tinto .

In it, pure aluminum oxide is obtained from bauxite using the Bayer process .

Refinery operation

The refinery cost 1.5 billion Australian dollars to build and began production in March 2004 with an annual output of 1.4 million tons of alumina. In 2009, the refinery employed 550 people. The bauxite used to make aluminum oxide comes from the Weipa bauxite mine to the plant by ship.

In 2012, 2.18 million tons of aluminum oxide were produced, while the number of employees was 735. The capacity is to be expanded to 3.4 million t.
