The Weipa bauxite mine is located on the western Cape York Peninsula near Weipa in Queensland , Australia . The bauxite deposit was discovered by geologists in 1955 and six years later the construction of the mining began, which began operating in 1964. In 2009, 16.3 million tons of ore were processed. In 2010 this mine was one of the five largest bauxite mines in Australia.
In 2008 Rio Tinto Alcan expanded the mining area south of the Embley River . The mining area of the mine is a traditional Aboriginal land , therefore the mining has been contractually regulated over an area of 3,860 km² according to the Western Cape Communities Coexistence Agreement (WCCCA) and the Ely Bauxite Mining Project Agreement (EBMPA). The granulated ore will be shipped to Rio Tinto's Yarwin Refinery and Queensland Alumina Limited in Gladstone and overseas.
