Yo La Tengo (often abbreviated as YLT) is an American indie rock - band , the 1984 in Hoboken , New Jersey was founded. Since 1992 it has consisted of Ira Kaplan (guitar, piano, vocals), Georgia Hubley (drums, piano, vocals) and James McNew (bass, vocals). Despite its limited commercial success, Yo La Tengo are considered a critics favorite. Although they mainly play their own compositions, Yo La Tengo are known for their extensive repertoire of cover songs, both live and on record.
The name Yo La Tengo is Spanish and means "I have her". This expression is used in baseball to say that you will catch the ball and that your teammates should not risk a collision.
history
The band was formed in 1984. Ira Kaplan and Georgia Hubley have been with us ever since. The first single The River Of Water was recorded with Dave Schramm and Mike Lewis . In 1986 the album Ride The Tiger followed in the same line-up . Schramm and Lewis left the band while Stephen Wichnewski joined. New Wave Hot Dogs , released in 1987, received critical acclaim but was not a commercial success. The same thing happened with the 1989 record President Yo La Tengo .
In 1990 Fakebook was published, a record almost exclusively with acoustic cover versions by u. a. Cat Stevens , Gene Clark , The Kinks, and Daniel Johnston . This was followed by May I Sing with Me (1992) and Painful (1993) with the new bassist James McNew. The band was already one of the most important bands of the 1990s among insiders and critics. This reputation was consolidated with Electr-O-Pura (1995). Yo La Tengo was compared to The Velvet Underground early on , so it was obvious that Yo La Tengo would play the Velvets in the film I Shot Andy Warhol . This was followed by I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One (1997), And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out (2000) and Summer Sun (2003).
In 2005, Yo La Tengo released a compilation of old songs on two CDs under the name Prisoners of Love . There is also a CD called A Smattering of Outtakes and Rarities with rare pieces. In 2006, the CD Yo La Tengo Is Murdering the Classics (available on the band's website) was released, featuring cover songs Yo La Tengo had played during the annual WFMU fundraising marathon since 1996.
For the album Fade , recorded in Chicago and released in January 2013, the band engaged the producer and sound tinkerer John McEntire for the first time , who shaped the post-rock genre in the mid-1990s with groups such as Tortoise and The Sea and Cake . His influence can be clearly heard on the album. In 2015 they released an album called Stuff Like That There , which was based on the fakebook published 25 years earlier in terms of style and content . The band's former guitarist Dave Schramm was also involved in the recordings.
