John McEntire

John McEntire (born April 8, 1970 in Portland , Oregon , USA ) is an American drummer, multi-instrumentalist and producer. He was or is u. a. Member of the bands Tortoise , Gastr del Sol , The Sea and Cake and Bastro , all of which are attributed to post rock . McEntire currently lives in Chicago , Illinois and owns the Soma Electronic Music Studio there.

Career

McEntire started playing drums when he was ten. He later studied percussion instruments and music technology at Oberlin College in Ohio. In 1988 he joined his first band called My Dad Is Dead, which he left a year later to join Bastro. After he moved to Chicago with David Grubbs and some position changes had taken place, the band was renamed Gastr del Sol. In addition, he founded the band Tortoise in 1989 (initially under the name Mosquito), to which he increasingly devoted himself when Gastr del Sol was primarily a project of Grubbs and Jim O'Rourke . In 1993 McEntire founded the band The Sea and Cake together with Archer Prewitt , Eric Claridge and Sam Prekop .

McEntire played on many recordings of musician friends such as Prewitt, Prekop, Grubbs and O'Rourke. He also worked with numerous bands as a sound engineer, mixer and producer. These include Bright Eyes , The Ex , Smog , Eleventh Dream Day , Stereolab , The For Carnation , Dianogah , The Fiery Furnaces and Trans Am . Before founding his own studio, he worked with Brian Deck (from the band Red Red Meat) in the now closed Idful studios. McEntire founded the Clava Studio with Deck in 1998.
