The Fiery Furnaces (dt .: The fiery furnaces ) are an American indie rock band that in 2000 in Brooklyn was founded. It consists primarily of the siblings Matthew and Eleanor Friedberger . Drummer Andy Knowles and bassist Toshi Yano played in the band for live performances .

Band history

The siblings Matthew and Eleanor Friedberger were born in a suburb of Chicago . In 2002, when they had already moved to New York, she took up the Rough Trade label . A year later, in 2003, the band 's first album, Gallowbird's Bark, was released . Already here the idiosyncratic, experimental style of the band can be recognized.

This continued on the band's second release in 2004, the album Blueberry Boat . This album in particular was highly praised by critics (e.g. Pitchfork Media ). In contrast to its predecessor, it is partly characterized by songs of epic length, which, however, mostly consist of very short partial sequences. Variety, creativity and unpredictability are typical of the band, but they also mean that the music is difficult to access, is hardly played on the radio and is rejected by some as being too chaotic.

In 2005 The Fiery Furnaces released EP , a collection of rarities and unreleased songs, which, despite the name, almost reached album length with 41 minutes. Some songs on the EP are electronically shaped. In the same year Rehearsing My Choir was released , an experimental album in which Olga Sarantos , the grandmother of the Friedbergers, took part.

In 2006, Bitter Tea was released , an album that, according to the band, was inspired by the synth pop group Devo and is more accessible than the previous albums .

At Fiery Furnaces, Matthew Friedberger is mainly responsible for writing the songs, while Eleanor sings most of the pieces. However, both of them sometimes also work in the other area.

Eleanor Friedberger was in a relationship with Alex Kapranos from Franz Ferdinand . The song Eleanor put your boots on is dedicated to her.
