The Sea and Cake is a jazz- influenced post and indie rock band from Chicago , Illinois , founded in 1993 by singer and guitarist Sam Prekop and bassist Eric Claridge along with guitarist Archer Prewitt and drummer John McEntire . which earned her the reputation of a post-rock supergroup. The band named themselves after the misunderstood Gastr-del-Sol song title The C in Cake .

history

The musicians involved were actively involved in the Chicago post-rock scene before and after the band was founded. On the first albums, the influences of the previous bands of the members (including Gastr Del Sol, The Coctails, Shrimp Boat and Tortoise ) were more or less clearly audible. Her own interpretation of the sound includes elements from jazz, rhythm and blues , krautrock and easy listening , but also uses catchy pop structures and electronic sounds . Since the 2000 album Oui , the band has also increasingly processed Latin American and African influences. The band's trademark became the relaxed, elegant and rhythmically precise sound. The method of adding Prekop's vocals at the very end of the recording is also unusual, which means that the other band members only hear this element for the first time when mixing the respective album.

Between 2004 and 2007, The Sea and Cake took a break. Even in the time between the other albums, the musicians worked on solo albums or worked with artist friends. With the exception of the 2007 album Everybody , all of the band's releases were produced by McEntire, and all albums were released on Thrill Jockey . The artistic design of the albums often consists of paintings by Claridge as well as photographs by McEntire.

The band met with a positive response, especially from critics. The 1994 debut album The Sea and Cake was number 4 in the critics 'charts and number 6 in the Spex readers' charts .
