Selma Blair Beitner (born June 23, 1972 in Southfield , Michigan ) is an American actress .

life and career

Blair comes from a Jewish family, her Hebrew first name is Batsheva. Her parents are Elliot Ipcatty Beitner and Molly Ann Cooke. She attended the Jewish Hillel Day School in Farmington Hills before moving to the private Cranbrook Kingswood School in Bloomfield Hills near Detroit . She began her studies in 1990 at Kalamazoo College, where she gained her first experience as an actress in the play Little Theater of the Green Goose . After the first semester, she moved to the University of Michigan , which she graduated in 1994 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography and a Bachelor of Arts in English .

Blair then went to New York City to pursue a career as a photographer. However, she found that this profession would not fill her and enrolled at the Stella Adler Acting School to take acting lessons. In her acting class, an agent spotted her soon after. A week later, she received her membership card with the actors' union, making her first appearance in a television commercial for a theater in Virginia . However, Blair's official debut came back in 1993 when she appeared on an episode of the television series The Adventures of Pete and Pete . Her first film role was that of Pretzel Cart Lesbian in The Broccoli Theory (1996).

Blair first gained public attention through her appearances in films such as Strong Island Boys , Brown's Requiem and Girl . In 1997 she auditioned for the lead role in Buffy the Vampire Slayer , but had to let Sarah Michelle Gellar go first. Two years later, they were both in front of the camera in the teen drama Ice Cold Angels . The role as naive Cecile Caldwell gave Blair an unexpected career jump. Selma Blair was the victim of death threats in 1999 for sexual harassment by Hollywood filmmaker James Toback . Blair suffered from panic attacks caused by these events for over 15 years .

Her son, who was born on July 25, 2011, comes from her relationship with fashion designer Jason Bleick , which ended in September 2012.

Blair has been in a relationship with filmmaker Ron Carlson since 2015 .

In October 2018, she made the multiple sclerosis diagnosed two months earlier public.
