action

At Christmas 1955 the young Hellboy was told a legend by his foster father, Professor Trevor "Broom" Bruttenholm, about a time when people living in cities began to fight, drive away and kill the elves and trolls living in nature : In this situation, Balor, King of the Elves, asked the goblins to create an unstoppable, mechanical army. This "Golden Army" of gigantic mechanical warriors, "70 by 70 soldiers", who could be controlled by a crown of those with royal blood, has repulsed the people, but also killed them so mercilessly that King Balor regretted their commitment and concluded a truce has been. The Golden Army has been deactivated and hidden in a secret location where it has been waiting for millennia to be called back to battle. Balor gave the people one of the three parts into which he divided the crown. Prince Nuada, on the other hand, went into exile to protest against the armistice because he wanted to see the people destroyed.

In present-day New York City, Prince Nuada raids an auction offering the part of the crown that was given to the people and steals that part of the crown. The FBI's secret Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (BPRD) sends Hellboy's team to the auction house. They find the building abandoned, with no trace of the victims. When Abe tries to protect Liz, she discovers that she is pregnant. He identifies the attackers as “tooth fairies”: swarms of spider-like creatures who eagerly pounce on the teeth and bones of their prey and have left only pulpy excretions as the remains of the auction participants. Only Liz succeeds in defeating the "fairies". In the explosion, however, Hellboy intentionally let himself be thrown out of a window and thus became irrevocably known to the public. As a result of this mishap, the department was assigned a new head, the ectoplasmic ghost Johann Krauss, who lived in an almost human-shaped suit.

Meanwhile, Prince Nuada calls on his father to resurrect the Golden Army to wipe out humanity. When King Balor refuses, Prince Nuada kills the guards and eventually his father, thereby taking possession of the second part of the crown. His twin sister, Princess Nuala, is able to escape with the third part of the crown.

In the BPRD laboratory, Johann Krauss takes possession of the body of a tooth fairy and can thus reconstruct that it was bought at the “Troll Market”. With the special eyepieces provided by him, the BPRD team is able to identify the entrance under the Brooklyn Bridge and enter the troll market. There they meet the fleeing Princess Nuala and learn of the impending danger from the Golden Army. Nuala comes into possession of a map that is supposed to describe the hiding place of the Golden Army. Finally, there is a duel between Hellboy and the cave troll Wink, Prince Nuada's henchman, but Hellboy can defeat.

In revenge for Wink's death, Nuada uses a forest god, a creature similar to a giant tree, to kill Hellboy. In the ensuing chaos in the city, Hellboy saves a baby and is finally able to defeat the summoned creature, the last of its kind. Nuada shows Hellboy that mankind will always regard beings like him or the forest god as a threat, no matter how much good they may do. When Hellboy hands over the recently rescued baby to his mother, this is confirmed: the mother does not thank him, rather she condemns him for having put the baby in danger. The rejection of the people around raises doubts in Hellboy about his commitment to the BPRD.

At the BPRD headquarters, the card turns out to be blank parchment. Liz thinks she needs a distance from Hellboy. Hellboy gets drunk with Abe after he admitted that he was in love with Princess Nuala. When Prince Nuada shows up at headquarters, Nuala, who has a connection to her twin brother, hides the third part of the crown in a book in the BPRD library and throws the container with the map into the fire. Nuada realizes, however, that the container itself is the map, the imprint of which reveals the hiding place of the Golden Army.

When Nuala triggers the alarm, a duel between Hellboy and Prince Nuada occurs, in which Nuada injures Hellboy with a spearhead. Nuada gives Abe an ultimatum: If the third crown piece was not brought to him, he would not see Nuala again and Hellboy would die as the spearhead could not be pulled out. Abe realizes that any attempt to remove the spearhead will keep it moving towards the heart. The BPRD team finds the map print, and Abe discovers the artifact in a book and takes it. Liz, Abe and Krauss set out for Ireland with Hellboy to look for the Golden Army near the Giant's Causeway .

When they arrived in Ireland, they did not find access to the golden army at first, but met a goblin who offered to show them the entrance if he could get the spearhead from Hellboy's chest. When Liz says it can't be removed, the goblin replies that he knows someone who can. In the cave they meet an angel of death. He has the opportunity to remove the spearhead, but he tells Liz what consequences this can have for the world. Hellboy's fate continues to subjugate the world, and his death could prevent that fate. But Liz still wants him to be saved. The Angel of Death removes the spearhead and tells Liz that she has to give Hellboy a reason to live. She then tells him that she is pregnant. When the four arrive in the hiding place of the Golden Army near Nuada, Abe hands over the third part of the crown in the hope of saving Nuala. Nuada then awakens the Golden Army and lets them attack the four. Hellboy can defeat some warriors in the army, Krauss is even able to take possession of the soldiers, but every defeated soldier sits down again.

As a last resort, Hellboy challenges Nuada's claim to the crown and challenges him to a fight. Hellboy can defeat Nuada, but does not kill him because Nuala would die at the same time. Nuada says he will never stop fighting people. When Hellboy turns away from Nuada, this Hellboy wants to stab from behind, but collapses himself, hit by an invisible force, fatally, since at the same time Nuala commits suicide with a stab in the heart to protect Hellboy. Abe confesses his love to the dying Nuala. Liz destroys the crown, making the Golden Army useless. On the surface, BPRD Director Tom Manning is already waiting for the team and now has to accept the resignation from Hellboy, Liz, Abe and Krauss.

Finally, Hellboy wants to settle down with Liz in a nice place so that his baby can grow up well protected. Liz tells him that they are twins.

Reviews

"Conclusion: comic-colored action spectacle meets fairytale love story in monster garb - suspect cult!"

“Conclusion: 'Hellboy II' is an imaginative action and effect fireworks display that is entertaining somewhere between fairy tales, horror and superhero films, especially with its atmosphere and original design. The story is more of a minor matter. "
