production

The Wells Cathedral in Somerset in southwest England

Andrew Cosby and Christopher Golden wrote the script together with Mike Mignola , the illustrator and author of the comic book. Directed by Neil Marshall .

David Harbor replaced Ron Perlman in the title role, who played Hellboy in the first two films. Daniel Dae Kim was cast as half-Japanese, half-American captain Ben Daimio after an originally planned casting of Ed Skrein led to whitewashing allegations. Milla Jovovich and Ian McShane can also be seen in other roles .

In the fall of 2017, filming took place on and in Wells Cathedral . Approval for this was given by those responsible after the makers of the film had convinced them that Hellboy is not a bad guy. Further recordings were made in the Nu Boyana Film Studios in Sofia. Filming ended on December 27, 2017.

The film music was composed by Benjamin Wallfisch . The soundtrack, which includes a total of 12 pieces of music, including Rock Me Like a Hurricane in a Spanish version of Unprotected Innocence, is due to be released by Sony Classical on April 5, 2019.

At the New York Comic Con in October 2018, excerpts from the film were shown to the fans and viewers present for the first time. The theatrical release for US cinemas was initially planned for January 11, 2019, but was then postponed to April 11, 2019. It should come to German cinemas on the same day. The premiere took place on April 9, 2019 in New York.
