Hadaa Sendoo

Hadaa Sendoo ( Sendoogiin Chadaa ; * 1961 in Inner Mongolia , People's Republic of China ) is a Mongolian poet, editor and translator whose poems have been translated into several languages.

life and work

Childhood and youth

Hadaa Sendoo was born in 1961 in what is now Inner Mongolia and grew up in the capital, Hohhot . His father was the director of a theater in Hohot and his mother a stage actress. In the ›middle school‹, which corresponds to the German high school, he learned Old Mongolian and Chinese . During the Cultural Revolution he was sent to nomads in the Shiiliigool area for four years, where his father and grandparents on his father's side come from. In 1984 he returned to Hohot and finished upper middle school.

As a young person, Hadaa Sendoo often had the opportunity to read Mongolian literature - such as the classics, the traditional epics, especially the Jangar, as well as Mongolian folk songs and modern Mongolian poetry (shuleg).

Studies and Early Poems

On the advice of her father, Hadaa Sendoo began studying at the art college in Hohhot. Here he soon became the assistant to the editor of an art and culture magazine. Since that time he has been writing poetry. In 1989 he published the first book of poems, Nomad Songs and Moonlight , with texts that he still wrote in Chinese, but with Mongolian themes. The volume was published by a publisher for national minorities.

The 1990s

In 1991, Hadaa Sendoo decided to move to Mongolia , where he got married and has lived in the capital Ulaanbaatar . He teaches as a professor of literature. His research focus is Mongolian folk literature, including folk songs and Mongolian mythology.

In 1996, Hadaa Sendoo published the first book of poems Felsgesang / Rock Song written in modern Mongolian with Cyrillic letters . His style was now very different from that of early poetry. In 1998 he joined the Mongolian Writers' Union. In 1999 he and friends founded the cultural magazine The World's Mongolians , a bilingual publication (in Mongolian and English) in Mongolia. In the summer of 1999 he organized the first Asian Poetry Festival in Ulaanbaatar together with the Mongolian poet S. Tserendorj.

2000 until today

In October 2006 the World Poetry Almanac was published , an international poetry yearbook in Central Asia initiated by Sendoo. In 2009 Come Back to Earth appeared , which received a lot of attention. Among other things, it received the Best Book of Poetry Award from the International Writers' Association . On September 24, 2011, Hadaa Sendoo joined the World Poetry Movement and became one of the founding members of this movement.

In 2012, Hadaa Sendoo was invited to participate in the largest poetry festival ever held in Great Britain, the Poetry Parnassus at the Southbank Center. At the same time, poems appeared in the World Record Anthology , edited by Bloodaxe, and in an anthology of the best contemporary poems by 60 representative poets from around the world.

Hadaa Sendoo has received numerous awards, including the Mongolian Writers' Union Prize. He has received awards for literary achievements in Mongolia, Greece, Canada, the USA and has been invited to participate in international poetry festivals in Europe, Asia, North and South America. Several poems were included in the list of the Top 500 Poems .

Sendoo's poems have been translated into Greek, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Hebrew, Russian, Georgian, Turkish, Lithuanian and Persian.

In 2008, Hadaa Sendoo was elected a member of the Mongolian Academy of Humanities. Hadaa Sendoo is currently the consulting editor of the International Literary Quarterly . He was invited as a guest by the influential International Poetry Festival of Medellin (Festival Internacional de Poesía de Medellín), and also in 2011 by the Tokyo Poetry Festival (東京ポエトリー・フェスティバル).

When Sweet Scent of Grass (بوی شیرین چمن) was published in Farsi in 2016 , the book caught a lot of attention. The book was presented and discussed at the internationally known Tehran International Book Fair . Hadaa Sendoo's poem The Wind can be heard at the end of the film Until There - A Mongolian tale . This film was first awarded at the International Tourism Film Festival and received the Young Director Award in Cannes in 2016.

Professor Ban'ya Natsuishi 夏石番矢 Hadaa, who teaches at Meiji University in Japan, named Sendoo one of the best poets writing in the world today . The Peruvian poet Carlos H. Garrido Chalen wrote to all members of the Writers' Union in Latin America: Hadaa Sendoo is a leading poet known worldwide . Hadaa Sendoo was recognized as an accomplished leader of influence by the American Biographical Institute in 2010 .
