Crimson Peak is an American mystery - horror movie with romantic elements, which on 25 September 2015 at the Fantastic Fest in Austin premiered and was released in Germany on October 15, 2015.

action

Young Edith Cushing cannot overcome her mother's death for a long time, especially because as a child she was haunted by the ghost who told her to beware of Crimson Peak when the time came . From then on she believed in ghosts and worked as an author of scary stories. Edith is educated and talented, but as a writer in the men's world around 1900 she was viewed with suspicion. She lives in Buffalo with her father, Carter Cushing, a contractor . When one day the Scottish aristocrat Thomas Sharpe shows up, who is short of money, he wraps the young woman around his finger with his charming manner. Her father is suspicious, but Edith is head over heels in love with the mysterious man. After the dubious death of her father, Edith takes refuge in the arms of her new love and marries Thomas.

The two move into a shabby castle called Allerdale Hall in the Highlands of Northern England , which is his family's ancestral home. Thomas' sister Lucille also lives here. Thomas works day and night on his latest invention. Edith soon feels lonely and abandoned in her new life and in the cold house. Allerdale Hall turns out to be a nightmare for Edith. Since the mansion was built on a clay deposit, and as a result continues to sink in, a red mass occasionally oozes from the walls of the house, which is why the house seems to be bleeding and breathing. At night, the ghosts of the past return to the house, but they don't scare Edith, they want to protect them. One night a voice advised her to leave the house because of a mortal threat. Edith soon learns that the house is called "Crimson Peak" by locals.

During the course of the film, Edith discovers that Lucille and Thomas killed their mother when they were children and that Thomas was married three times before her. He had only married the women to finance his insane inventions with their money. As soon as their fortunes were used up, all three were mysteriously killed. From the notes of one of the women, Edith finally learns that this happened through tea that Lucille had poisoned. Thereupon she starts an attempt to escape, which however fails and from which she can hardly walk.

One night Edith observed her husband Thomas incest with his sister Lucille and was thrown from the first floor into the entrance hall by Lucille. She is seriously injured in the process. A childhood friend of Edith's surprising arrival, Dr. Alan McMichael, save your life. He suspected Edith might be attacked and is coming to save her. When he wants to flee with Edith, he is stabbed by Thomas on Lucille's orders. While Thomas is supposed to kill Alan in the basement, Lucille wants to force Edith to transfer the rest of her assets from the United States to the Sharpe account. But out of love for Edith, Thomas turns against his sister, who kills him and then attacks Edith. However, Edith manages to overwhelm Lucille with the help of Thomas's ghost and escape Crimson Peak with the injured Alan.

background

Even if the film is repeatedly compared to The Downfall of the House of Usher because of a similar basic constellation of people , a simple classification into the horror film genre is not possible. Guillermo del Toro said shortly before the release that Crimson Peak is not a horror film, but a Gothic romance that should be creepy, exciting and full of emotion. However, the rumor had spread in advance that Crimson Peak was a horror or scary film. The difficulty in determining the genre of the film, often described by the critics, countered Tom Hiddleston , Crimson Peak was "a very passionate love story, which is supported and complemented by fantastic elements." Crimson Peak is the first film of the mystery -Horror genres based on Pan's Labyrinth , directed by Guillermo del Toro.

Filming

The shooting took place in Canada . They started at Pinewood Toronto Studios on February 10th and ended on May 14th, 2014. Parts of the filming took place on Queen Street West in Hamilton , Ontario on April 28, 2014 .

occupation

Benedict Cumberbatch and Emma Stone were originally scheduled to star in the lead roles, but both left the project for reasons unknown. Tom Hiddleston joined the cast just 72 hours after Cumberbatch left, but only with their consent, as the two are close friends.

Production costs

The production and financing costs of the film amounted to 55 million US dollars, an amount that, according to Scott Mendelson of Forbes Online, cannot hide the weaknesses resulting from the unjustifiably suggested horror factor beforehand. He complains that supernatural elements are hardly present in the film and only inadequately built into the plot.

Soundtrack

The original soundtrack for the film Crimson Peak was released by Quartet Records in October 2015 and contains the original score by Fernando Velázquez . The soundtrack comprises 36 tracks and has a total length of 1:14:47 h. A critic from filmmusicreporter.com remarked on the music that it underscores both the romance and the terror in the film and has Edith's theme , which is played in numerous variations during the film, one of the strongest film music pieces of 2015. He also highlights the lullaby Lullaby , played in the film by Jessica Chastain in the role of Lady Lucille in a piano version. The piece is based on the track In The Sails Of Your Dreams and was written by Velázquez together with Guillermo del Toro . However, it is not included in the original soundtrack.

reception

Age rating

In Germany the film is FSK 16 . The statement of reasons for the release states: “In addition to a few moments of tension and shock, the film also contains several, sometimes clear, scenes of violence. However, due to their psychosocial development, young people aged 16 and over are able to place this violence in the context of the supernatural horror story and to maintain a corresponding distance. The historic venue also makes it easier for people aged 16 and over to distance themselves emotionally. "

Reviews

From the German Film and Media Review was Crimson Peak with the predicate of value provided. The reasoning states: “With Crimson Peak, master director Guillermo del Toro succeeds in an artful balancing act between the different varieties of the horror genre. From romantic Gothic horror to cleverly staged shock moments to bloody little 'surprises', everything is included in this film. […] Del Toro calls Robert Wises The Haunting - Until the Blood Freezes and Jack Clayton's The Innocents - as well as Hitchcock and Kubrick as film historical models for his ghost story, in which he tries to vary the rules of many Gothic romances. He succeeds in parts really well, but unfortunately, in the opinion of the jury, he cannot decide in which direction the film should develop ”. A critic from Focus Online particularly emphasizes the film set: “Visually, it is one of the most impressive horror films of recent years. You could almost say the house is the secret star of the film. When it comes to the plot, on the other hand, one always gets the feeling that a lot of potential has been given away lightly. You don't get to see such an excellent cast in a horror film every day ”. At Rotten Tomatoes , the film was able to convince 73 percent of 259 critics; The creepy atmosphere created by director Guillermo del Toro and his talent for unforgettable camera positions were particularly praised.

Gross profit

The film, which opened in 2983 US cinemas, had to compete on the first weekend not only with the child-friendly horror film Goosebumps and Bridge of Spies , which was also launched , but also with the blockbuster The Martian - Rescues Mark Watney . Still, Crimson Peak grossed $ 13.1 million on the first weekend after its theatrical release in North America.
