action

After Zach Cooper and his mother moved from New York to the small town of Madison, Delaware , the teenager realizes that his new home has little to offer to boys his age. The Coopers' new neighbor is the strange goose bumps author RL Stine . Zach immediately takes a liking to his daughter Hannah. The boy discovers the dark secret of their father, because the seemingly fantastic creatures are real and the author can only control these monsters by taming them with his stories.

One day, Zach accidentally frees some of the monsters, including the evil Slappy doll, who steals the rest of the books and frees the monsters that are now terrorizing the area. Zach, Hannah, and their father must get the situation back under control and try to put the demons back into the books they belong in. But Slappy burns them. Stine explains to them that as a teenager he came up with monsters in order to be able to terrorize the students who bullied him. However, his monsters later became real, and the only way to recapture them is to lock them in a book using a story.

The group decides to write another story to capture all the monsters. Stine reports that he can only write on his old typewriter, which is in high school. So they make their way to high school and are hunted by all kinds of monsters. Zach realizes that Hannah is just a creation by RL Stine. They make it to high school, and Stine begins making the story while the others warn everyone else in high school. After everyone witnesses an attack by one of the monsters, they are believed and the students and teachers begin to barricade the school.

When Stine is almost done with his story, Slappy breaks his fingers so that he can no longer write. Stine wants to flee because the monsters are after him. But Zach's group accompanies him. A showdown finally takes place at an abandoned amusement park. Zach completes the story, and Stine's creations, including Hannah, are sucked into the book.

A few days later, when high school reopens, Stine can be seen as the new English teacher. When Stine and Zach are talking to each other about the loss of Hannah, she suddenly stands in a hallway and waits for Zach. Stine explains to him that he has written another book and thus brought Hannah back to life. Zach and Hannah kiss and leave school together. At the end Stine walks past his typewriter, which apparently writes by itself. He realizes that there is a monster, the invisible friend, sitting at the machine who, like all other monsters, was not sucked into the book because he was forgotten, and he screams.

Reviews

This section consists only of a cunning collection of quotes from movie reviews. Instead, a summary of the reception of the film should be provided as continuous text, which can also include striking quotations, see also the explanations in the film format .

At Rotten Tomatoes , the film was able to convince 73 percent of the critics (of 92 reviews, as of October 28, 2015) . The reviews in German-speaking countries were rather mixed:

“The audience hardly needs to laugh properly. It also remains a mystery why the film is shown in 3D: the effects are minimal. What remains is an exciting film with great animated monsters and one or the other amazing twist. That's enough for an entertaining visit to the cinema. "

"It won't be really funny (and scary)."
