action

On the day of her wedding, Susan Murphy is hit by a meteorite , which is why she grows to a height of 15 meters at the altar. Susan is captured by the US military and locked in a top secret government building. She is given the monster name Gigantika. In prison, she meets her fellow prisoners, Insectosaurus (a caterpillar that has grown to over 100 meters by atomic radiation ), Missing Link (a fish-man frozen 20,000 years ago that scientists thawed), Dr. Cockroach (a mad scientist, half human, half cockroach ) as well as benzoate ostylezen bicarbonate, called BOB for short (a one-eyed blue gelatinous mass that was created by crossing a genetically modified tomato and a dessert sauce) and the Invisible Man, who, however just sitting dead in a chair.

When the earth is attacked by an alien robot, which cannot be defeated by the military alone, the monsters are now supposed to fight against him to save the planet. In return, they are promised freedom. You will be flown to San Francisco . There it turns out that the robot is after Susan, because through her contact with the meteorite she has absorbed the energy-rich raw material quantonium into her body, which is also responsible for her enormous strength and size. On the Golden Gate Bridge , the monsters manage to destroy the robot.

After this success, the monsters are released at Susan's parents in Modesto . In the course of the visit, the monsters quickly realize that they are undesirable to humans and no longer suit them. When Susan visits her fiancé Derek, he no longer wants to be with her and abandons her.

A short time later, she is sucked into the interior of a spaceship. Insectosaurus appears to die trying to prevent this from happening. Inside the spaceship, Susan meets Gallaxhar, who extracts the quantonium from her body. Gallaxhar clones himself a thousand times, creating an army with which he wants to populate the earth. As a result of the extraction, Susan will shrink back to her old size and lose her supernatural strength. BOB, Missing Link and Dr. Meanwhile, cockroaches set out to free Gigantika from the spaceship. Together they manage to trigger the self-destruction mechanism of Gallaxhar's spaceship. Susan manages to escape, but the other monsters are trapped in the spaceship. Gallaxhar's attempt to escape is thwarted by Susan, who then takes the quantonium back into her body and uses her regained strength to free the other monsters before the spaceship explodes. The insectosaurus, now transformed into a butterfly, saves them from falling to earth.

Back on earth, the monsters are no longer feared and despised by humans, but admired. Susan takes her monster name Gigantika and accepts that she is a monster. General Putsch explains that a snail has fallen into a nuclear reactor in France and the monster Escargantua is on its way to Paris. So the monsters make their way to Paris together.

background

The film contains numerous allusions to well-known science fiction , monster and horror films , with the main characters themselves already paying homage to some of these films. The blue monster BOB, for example, looks similar to the monster from the horror film Blob . Susan aka Ginormica befall the same fate as the title character in Attack of the 20 Foot Woman ( Attack of the 50 Foot Woman , 1958). Prof. Dr. Cockroach is an allusion to Die Fliege , whereas Missing Link could be taken from both Das Ding aus dem Swamp and Der Schreck vom Amazonas ( Creature of the Black Lagoon , 1954). Insectosaurus is based on Mothra and Godzilla and thus refers to the Japanese monster cinema (in the film it is explained that the insectosaurus attacked Tokyo). At the beginning of the film, when the robotic probe is discovered, Code Nimoy is triggered, a reference to Star Trek actor Leonard Nimoy aka Mr. Spock. The words " ET Go Home!" Can be seen on one of the rockets fired at the alien robot , while the soundtrack is also alluded to.

The film premiered on March 9, 2009 in Berlin .

Reviews

For the most part, the film received moderate to positive ratings. He received 6.5 out of 10 points from IMDb and 56 out of 100 possible points from Rotten Tomatoes. The effects were particularly praised, while the limited range of ideas was criticized.

“The first animated film produced in 3D from DreamWorks is based on various models with a lot of effort but little esprit and turns out to be a fantasy adventure that is all too poor in ideas. The effect of the three-dimensional effects vanishes completely in conventional two-dimensional cinemas. "

“The story of a few monsters that humans keep in laboratories and one day go into battle against aliens is less imaginative than the 'Shrek' films, for example. [..] 3-D is of little use if the characters and story are flat. "

“The nicely animated retro fun comes in the most modern guise. Like an itinerant preacher with a mission, studio boss Jeffrey Katzenberg is currently on the road to praise the blessings of the new 3D technology. In fact, the film with its pressure waves, flying rocks or the clone warrior army is visually quite nicely designed into the auditorium. "
