action

George and Harold are classmates in the 4th grade of the Jerome Horwitz Elementary School and master their everyday school life with a lot of fun and imagination. They play a lot of pranks, which is why they are especially feared by the sadistic headmaster Benjamin "Benny" Krupp. In addition to school, George and Harold draw superhero comics. One of the superheroes is "Captain Underpants", a hero from the underpants planet who came to earth as a child and was raised by dolphins.

When Krupp caught the two friends at a prank again and wanted to put both of them in different classes, he was hypnotized by them and thus became "Captain Underpants". At the same time, a new teacher comes to the school who wants to eliminate laughter from the world. It is up to Harold, George and Captain Underpants to keep the world laughing.

production

On October 20, 2011 it was reported that DreamWorks had secured the rights to make a film based on the children's book series Captain Underpants . Two years later, plans took shape: it was announced that Rob Letterman would direct and Nicholas Stoller would write the script. Letterman and Stoller had already worked together on the film Gulliver's Travels (2010). In January 2014, the voice actors were announced.

In the spring of 2015, Captain Underpants was outsourced to the animation studio Mikros Image in Montreal, Canada, due to restructuring at DreamWorks , in order to save costs. As a result, it is expected that the look of the film will be different from previous DreamWorks films. In February 2015, it was reported that Letterman has left the project and will likely be replaced by David Soren , who previously directed Turbo (2013).

publication

In June 2014, the film initially received January 13, 2017 as the start date. The later release date of March 10, 2017 was adopted by The Boss Baby in September 2015 , so Captain Underpants was postponed to June 2, 2017. Captain Underpants will be the final DreamWorks film to be distributed by 20th Century Fox. Universal Pictures will act as the distributor of the following films after DreamWorks is acquired by Universal. In Germany, the film was released on October 12, 2017.
